Rex Hogan was the New York Jets’ assistant general manager

The New York Jets are moving on from a long-time front-office member.

According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the Jets have agreed to mutually part ways with assistant general manager Rex Hogan. This will allow the long-time front office member to “explore other opportunities.” Hughes also said that the “well respected” Hogan would be sought after by teams around the league.

Hogan has been with the organization since 2019 after having roles with the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.

Under both Mike Maccagnan and Joe Douglas, Hogan was responsible for, according to the Jets’ team website, “day-to-day operations of the Jets player personnel department.” He also “oversees the college and pro scouting departments, while working directly on personnel decisions and evaluations.”

The change to the Jets’ front office could be a welcome one, especially in free agency and the later rounds of the draft.

Most of the team’s recent free-agency additions have been lackluster. With whiffs such as C.J. Uzomah, Laken Tomlinson, Allen Lazard, Dalvin Cook, Mecole Hardman, and Billy Turner over the past two years, the team has not been able to consistently add productivity from the open market.

The Jets have also struggled in the late rounds of the draft. A combination of ignoring positions of need and over-drafting players has caused the Jets to not land many contributors outside of the early rounds.

Take the 2023 draft, for example; the Jets selected linebacker Zaire Barnes and cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse in the sixth round. While not necessarily deemed bad prospects, the team was already strong at these positions and did not need further depth.

Instead, the Jets could have opted for further depth at wide receiver, as players like Trey Palmer and A.T. Perry, who would have immediately boosted the team’s thin wide receiver depth chart in a win-now season, were available.

The buck ultimately stops at Joe Douglas, but adding a new voice to the front office might be exactly what the Jets need. The organization needs to hit on as many signings and picks as possible, and adding a new voice with a new thought process may help its overall chances of doing so.
