In another late-night move, the Jets reached an agreement with veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor for their backup role

The late-night New York Jets are at it again.

After agreeing to terms with John Simpson and Javon Kinlaw, the Jets found their backup quarterback for 2024, agreeing to terms with veteran Tyrod Taylor. According to Josina Anderson, the deal is for two years.

Taylor, 34, recently played in New York with the Giants from 2022-2023. He appeared in 14 games with five starts, racking up 1,399 passing yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions on 188 attempts. His passer rating was 88.9.

While not an above-average level quarterback, Taylor can be relied upon to steady a team for games at a time. He still has a strong arm, evidenced by his total of 17 big-time throws on limited reps in 2023, per Pro Football Focus. Additionally, he can hit short passes and keep drives moving.

Taylor also has above-average mobility in and outside of the pocket. He can avoid pressure and extend plays, allowing his playmakers to get open and make plays down the field.

Ultimately, Taylor is the steady hand at backup quarterback that the Jets needed. He can keep games within reach and even win a few when necessary.

More importantly, he has experience in multiple NFL systems, which will prepare him to drive the Jets’ offense forward in a situation where Aaron Rodgers is injured.

The Jets were dead in the water when they lost Rodgers last season, as they did not have a quarterback capable of leading an offense behind him. With Taylor in the fold, the Jets will not have that issue again. They will still be able to compete in the event of another Rodgers absence.
