In the waning hours of the first day of the legal tampering window, the New York Jets agreed to terms with a former Ravens offensive lineman

After a long wait, the New York Jets have made an addition to their offense in free agency.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Jets have agreed to sign former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman John Simpson to a two-year contract worth up to $18 million. Simpson is expected to play left guard for the Jets, which is where he lined up for Baltimore last season.

Simpson started every game the Ravens played in the regular season and playoffs. He is known for his physicality in the run game. Former NFL player Chris Long raved about Simpson on his podcast, saying he loves how he “sets the tone” and the attitude he plays with.

Simpson can also hold his own as a pass blocker. According to PFF, the offensive guard allowed a 4.2% pressure rate in 2023, ranking 21st out of 78 qualified guards. He only allowed one sack.

Ultimately, Simpson is currently an average player with more upside remaining. At only 26 years old, it is possible that the former Raven could grow in his run and pass blocking and become a long-term fixture for New York.

The Jets have dealt with much worse at the position in recent years with Laken Tomlinson. With a similar level of durability, a better baseline of production, and further room to grow as a player, Simpson is a good start to New York’s offseason revamp of their offensive line.
