NY Jets’ Morstead talks accolades, MetLife turf on ‘Cool Your Jets’

On the latest episode of the “Cool Your Jets” Podcast, Thomas Morstead talked about various topics surrounding the team and his performance

The MVP of the New York Jets is continuing his media tour, as he stopped by Jets X-Factor today.

Appearing on the latest episode of the “Cool Your Jets” podcast, hosted by Ben Blessington and Michael Nania, Jets punter Thomas Morstead answered various questions about the team and his upper-level punting this season.

Asked about the sudden attention he is receiving, Morstead said, “It’s been a blur of the past few days” and that he is “doing great.”

“It’s certainly appreciated. The whole season has been phenomenal. Just being a part of this team. We’ve made a lot of big plays throughout the season, so it’s been a lot of fun.”

The Jets’ punter said Sunday’s game would rank “up there” as one of his favorite football memories, but he did not think it was one of the best performances of his career.

“We made some big plays in the game, but I’d like to have three punts back in the game that weren’t what I liked. That doesn’t mean that they were bad, but they weren’t exactly what I was trying to do.”

When asked about the overall unit, Morstead said they are “process focused” and that “every play matters.”

“It doesn’t matter what the score is. Guys are just trying to be great and do their job at a high level, and that’s easier said than done,” said Morstead.

“Generally speaking, if your specialists are playing well, it really can synergize to have a really good special teams unit…guys are playing their asses off. I think everybody realizes that if we really want to win these games, we are going to have to make plays on special teams. It’s exciting to be a part of.”

Outside of his punting, Morstead was also asked about the team rallying in the face of the Aaron Rodgers injury and the MetLife Stadium turf.

“I remember in the second quarter of that game, looking around at some of the older guys that had signed. A lot of them had signed with the idea that they would have a chance to play with Aaron and maybe make a run at the Super Bowl,” said Morstead.

“I remember looking around at some of the guys, seeing their faces, and was like, alright, we are going to see what we got here because this could absolutely crumble these guys if they’re not the right guys. No one’s blinked. Everyone’s acknowledged the reality of the situation, and we’re rolling forward.”

On the turf situation, the punter said that the numbers show that “injuries happen a little less on grass.” He also mentioned teams like the Steelers and Eagles that share grass stadiums with other teams, reasoning that “there is a way to make it work” for MetLife Stadium’s cold environment.

Morstead is a key part of the Jets this season and has been recognized as such this week. If the Jets’ punter continues to play at the level he has shown, this week of media rounds will not be the last one he does this season.
