NY Jets’ Thomas Morstead discusses his big game on ‘McAfee’

Appearing on the “Pat McAfee Show,” the New York Jets’ punter spoke about his big game against the Giants and Aaron Rodgers’ impact on the team

New York Jets punter Thomas Morstead is getting some well-deserved media attention.

After another outstanding performance on Sunday against the Giants, the punter appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” to discuss his performance and the overall feeling surrounding the Jets.

When asked about his success on Sunday, the punter said, “Sometimes you gotta talk a little dirty to the ball and just tell it what to do.. and it listened.”

Morstead also spoke about what it has been like to punt for a highly talented Jets defense this season.

“It’s been a lot of fun to punt for a team that’s defense is just balling…it’s been a lot of fun. I think we’re leading the league in the number of punts, we’ve been attacking, and the defense is making us right. Just to be playing that sort of complementary football that coaches talk about, we are actually doing it,” said Morstead.

“I can say we’ve had a hand in all four of our wins this year, not only on the punt team. Special teams have been awesome. Greg Zuerlien has been balling as well. We just have a crew of guys that believe that, and we are doing it week in and week out. It’s exciting to be a part of.”

The punter, when asked about the possibility of Aaron Rodgers returning this season, said it is a “hope” thing for the team.

“Every week you see him out there, he’s done another week of rehab. And all of a sudden, he is doing something new. You’re like, wow, this unrealistic prediction that he is coming back this season, there’s hope there,” said Morstead.

“The guys love seeing it. It’s inspiring to see him out there. I think we gotta just keep hanging in there and keep finding ways to win. You can see how this story could end, and it gives the guys a lot of hope.”

Morstead and the special teams units have been vital to the Jets this season. His ability to pin the opposing team deep in their own territory has allowed the Jets’ defense to operate at its highest level while giving the offense opportunities to capitalize on short fields.

It would be ideal if the Jets did not have to rely on Morstead as much, as it would signify more offensive success. But if the Jets can keep finding ways to win, as the punter said himself, then the Jets could be set up to have a well-rounded roster of defense, special teams, and offense in the event of a Rodgers return.

Until then, though, the Jets will need their punter to continue to work his magic and win the field position battle over the coming weeks.
