After being benched, Zach Wilson refuses to go back into the New York Jets’ starting lineup

The New York Jets’ entire season can be summed up with the latest on their quarterback drama.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets want to go back to Zach Wilson as the starter over Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian, but Wilson is resistant thus far.

This is the latest chapter in a Jets quarterback situation that is rapidly becoming an epic. After Aaron Rodgers went down four plays into the season with a torn Achilles, Wilson took the reins and started the next nine games. He was benched against the Bills in Week 11 for Boyle, who started the next two games. However, Boyle took a seat against the Falcons in Week 13, paving the way for Siemian.

Since both quarterbacks played so poorly, the Jets want to go back to Wilson for Week 14. After suffering multiple benchings over the past two seasons, though, it appears the former No. 2 overall pick is done.

While unsurprising given the state of the offense, Wilson’s reluctance to step back into the lineup reflects poorly on both him and the team’s leadership. It is rare for a player to choose not to play; to teammates, this can be considered the ultimate affront. It’s another sign of Robert Saleh‘s lack of command over the locker room, no matter how much he preaches culture.

Perhaps Wilson will play in the end. It may well be his last chance to play in an NFL game ever again. Still, for a player who caused one mutiny among his teammates a year ago when he refused to take responsibility for the team’s offensive failures, this is another bad look that could further isolate him.

Things keep getting worse for the Jets. Jets X-Factor will continue to monitor this story throughout the week. One thing is clear, though: regardless of who is at the helm for New York, their offense is historically putrid.
