Odell Beckham Jr. is no longer a New York Jets receiver target

The New York Jets’ cornerbacks struggled the most against the Miami Dolphins in 2023. Miami continues to beef up its receiving corps, signing Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal worth $8.25 million.

It will be interesting to see how Miami uses Beckham. With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle entrenched as perhaps the best one-two punch in the league, the Dolphins also drafted receivers Malik Washington and Tahj Washington in the sixth and seventh rounds. Malik, in particular, was expected to go far earlier in the draft and has a strong profile as a slot receiver. Will Beckham be a consistent starter with Miami or a rotational piece?

Many believe that Beckham’s explosiveness is gone due to his age and injuries. Still, he put up respectable numbers with the Ravens in a limited role in 2023, posting 1.99 yards per route run (the league average was 1.77).

Michael Nania previously suggested that Beckham might make a good No. 3 receiver for the Jets. His YAC ability and strong production when in the slot seemed like good fits with Aaron Rodgers. The Jets were never linked to Beckham in the offseason, though. After they drafted Malachi Corley in the third round, the chances that the Jets would sign Beckham were low.

Still, Miami’s receiving corps looks even scarier now. Do the Dolphins intend to play in five-receiver sets? Hill and Waddle combined to post 25 catches on 29 targets for 358 yards (14.3 yards per reception) and two touchdowns in the two Jets-Dolphins matchups in 2023 — and Hill didn’t even play in the second game.

Elsewhere, two other veteran receivers signed deals. D.J. Chark inked a one-year deal with the Chargers, while Chase Claypool signed for one year with the Bills. The veteran free-agent market continues to thin out for the Jets, perhaps indicating that they like their receiver room.
