Overreactions to the Saints loss at the Ravens in week one

The story out of the New Orleans Saints week one loss to the Baltimore Ravens is the turnovers. Every quarterback and nearly every running back who touched the ball lost the ball. This would be enough overreaction for an entire piece but there is much more to dissect from this first week of football. Yes, it is preseason, but the current vibes are likely to leave many around the team uncomfortable with only two more games until they count.

Tony Jones, Jr. is the first running back behind Alvin Kamara

Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman looked awful in their limited play. All three runners fumbled the ball on the night, but Jones Jr did it while flashing big play ability. Jones Jr was hitting the holes quickly and making decisive runs. It looked as if Freeman and Murray were running in mud all night. Freeman is a good story but the difference in he and Jones Jr was incredibly noticeable. Expect Jones Jr to take over the number two running back slot as soon as next week. Murray is still an asset and could be on the trading block. Freeman will likely find himself looking for another team soon.

Taysom Hill will not win the quarterback job

Taysom Hill showed all he could against the Ravens and still seemed to be missing something. Often times, Hill was throwing without his feet set but had enough arm to make up for the off-balanced throws. This arm strength is good for now, but bad mechanics cannot be trusted over a season. Hill also was not doing much in the offense. He was simply looking at his first read and making the throw. Marquez Callaway’s play elevated Taysom Hill throughout his first three drives. Hill also should have had two interceptions but the Ravens dropped the second. Going into week two of the preseason, this is Jameis Winston’s job to lose.

The Saints defensive front can be special

Where has this Marcus Davenport been? Against the Ravens left tackle, Davenport looked like a player not ever seen in the NFL. This helped the entire line as everyone was doing their job. Malcolm Roach and Albert Huggins looked like mountains in the middle of the line. David Onyemata was everywhere making plays as well. The play of these linemen fed directly into the linebackers. Zack Baun and Kaden Elliss played incredibly well against the Ravens. Both flashed big play ability and contributed all over the field. All of these players impressed without the Saints biggest defensive stars on the field, notably, Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan. If these players can keep up the production when the full roster hits the field, this Saints front can be special going into the 2021 season.
