Joel Wilson might end up seeing game action in a few weeks, depending on how the tight end/fullback room shakes out.

According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Green Bay Packers have signed tight end Joel Wilson following his Monday workout with the team. Yesterday, the Packers worked out six players, including three tight ends, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he was added to the roster.

Wilson’s edition is interesting for several reasons. Green Bay is down bodies at the position, after Luke Musgrave went on the injured reserve for a lacerated kidney following the team’s win against the Los Angeles Chargers. At best, Musgrave will be back in three weeks, though, the coaching staff hasn’t been willing to commit to saying in public that he will be back this season.

Meanwhile, tight end/fullback Josiah Deguara was a non-participant in practice on Monday, which means that his hip injury might not fully recover before this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. With Deguara out last week, fullback Henry Pearson was elevated from the practice squad to play in game action. Unfortunately, practice squad call-ups only have three elevations before teams must bring them up to the 53-man roster to use them. With six games to go and Musgrave potentially out of the lineup for the rest of the year, it makes sense why the Packers looked for another body at the position.

Wilson is currently the lone tight end on the Packers’ practice squad, which currently has one more opening. The assumption is that Bo Melton, who was released from the 53-man roster yesterday, will be brought back to Green Bay’s practice team. On Monday, the Packers released Melton and running back James Robinson from their active roster, opening up two roster spots that could be potentially used to bring safety Darnell Savage and Eric Stokes off of the injured reserve in the near future.

Wilson originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent this spring before he was let go for a failed physical, but he ended up spending two months on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad. As of yet, he hasn’t played an NFL regular season game. The Packers elected to sign him over former third-round pick Devin Asiai, a blocking tight end, and Nick Eubanks, a plus athlete who the team has worked out previously back in 2021.
