Jake Dolegala, who has spent time with the Bengals and Patriots, gives the Packers a fifth quarterback under contract this summer.

Originally showing up to Green Bay as a tryout opportunity player in minicamp, quarterback Jake Dolegala has signed with the Packers, joining Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Packers have been active this offseason in regards to working out quarterbacks, with Benkert and former All-SEC passer Chad Kelly joining the team on a tryout basis in rookie camp. It was also reported that former Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond, a member of the 2021 draft class, was worked out by the team in May.

Dolegala played college football at Central Connecticut State after spending a year removed from high school at a prep school in New York. With the Blue Devils, Dolegala threw 1,136 passes for 8,126 yards, 48 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. The 6’7”, 242-pound quarterback helped lead the FCS program to their first playoff berth in program history.

He signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2019, completing 37-of-53 passes for 347 yards and two passing touchdowns in the preseason that year. Dolegala made the Bengals’ 53-man roster for the entirety of the 2019 season, despite not making an appearance in a regular-season game, but was released during final cuts of the 2020 preseason.

Dolegala would later sign with the New England Patriots as an off-and-on practice squad player in 2020, signing a futures contract in January of 2021, but was released by the team post-draft.

Should starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers show for training camp, as his former teammate James Jones claims, it’s unlikely that the Packers would hold onto five quarterbacks throughout the summer. From the current vantage point, it appears that Bortles, Benkert and Dolegala are fighting for one, or potentially no, 53-man roster spot, though there is potential for Dolegala to make Green Bay’s practice squad.
