During their first set of cuts on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers waived 2019 third-round pick Will Grier, seemingly handing over the backup quarterback job to staff favorite P.J. Walker. That, however, may not necessarily be the case.

In fact, the Panthers may not even go into the regular season with the only two arms they have left on the roster. Head coach Matt Rhule told reporters this afternoon that he isn’t going to solidify Walker as the No. 2 option behind Sam Darnold just yet.

“So many things could change over the next day, to be quite honest with you,” he said. “That’s why I’m hesitant to say ‘Someone is this.’ But in terms of if we play today, he [Walker] would be our No. 2 quarterback.”

Rhule praised Walker for his overall performance in the preseason, specifically highlighting his improved ball security over the exhibition contests. He still, though, isn’t ready to commit, as a release elsewhere could spark the team’s interest over the next 24 or so hours.

“I think if you find the right older guy, there’s always a benefit with those guys,” Rhule said of possibly backing up Darnold with a veteran presence. “We have lots of flexibility. We can add a third quarterback, we can put a quarterback on the practice roster. But sometimes it has to be the right guy, at any position.”

So, are there any “right” guys out there? We’ll see.
