The Carolina Panthers spoke with three free-agent pass rushers on Thursday, two of which attended nearby University of South Carolina. They were able to get a handshake from one of the two, but the one wasn’t Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney left his visit to see the Panthers this evening without a contract, and will continue his latest round through free agency. According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, he’s now scheduled to fly over to the New York Jets next week.

A Rock Hill, S.C. native and Gamecocks superstar, Clowney was selected with the first overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft by Houston Texans. He spent his first five pro seasons in Houston, where he notched three Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro nod.

Then, from 2019 to 2023, Clowney picked up stops with the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. His best campaign away from the Texans would come this past year, as he notched 9.5 sacks and a career-high 71 pressures.

The Gamecock the Panthers ended up keeping around was outside linebacker D.J. Woonum, who agreed to terms on a two-year, $12.5 million pact. Carolina also spoke with 2020 No. 2 overall pick Chase Young.
