There will not be much fanfare, or any on-field activities for that matter, but the New England Patriots will officially kick off their 2021 training camp on Tuesday. The first group of players is set to report to the team’s facility, after all: Mac Jones and New England’s rookie class will arrive at Gillette Stadium to go through the acclimation period and get ready for camp.

The Patriots are one of six NFL teams that have their rookie class report on Tuesday. Two of their AFC East rivals — the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets — will welcome their first-year players that day as well, as will the Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

When it comes to the Patriots, the following players are concerned:

  • QB Mac Jones
  • DT Christian Barmore
  • DE Ronnie Perkins
  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson
  • LB Cameron McGrone
  • S Joshuah Bledsoe
  • OT William Sherman
  • WR Tre Nixon
  • K Quinn Nordin

While first-round quarterback Mac Jones is the biggest name on the list for obvious reasons, the next two are actually worth keeping a closer eye on in the coming hours and days. Both Christian Barmore and Ronnie Perkins — the Patriots’ selections in the second and third rounds, respectively — have not yet signed their rookie contracts, but progress could be made soon with camp on the horizon.

What is true for all players is that the Collective Bargaining Agreement governs what they are and aren’t allowed to do. According to the CBA, the start of training camp “shall be limited to physical examinations, meetings, and classroom instruction; no on-field activities shall be permitted other than running and conditioning.”

On-field activities, meanwhile, are limited to conditioning, timing and testing — very much what teams are allowed to do during the first phase of the offseason workout program. The only difference is that all coaches are permitted on the field at this point in time.

Players will also receive “per diem” payments starting on the first day of camp. Jones and company will get a weekly rate of $1,700 for participating in camp.

As for veteran players, they will start to report to Gillette Stadium on Thursday. Quarterbacks and injured players — those who ended the previous season on either injured reserve or a similar list — will arrive that day, with the rest of the roster set to arrive on July 27. One day later, the team will hold its first practice of the summer.
