Last week, the Miami Dolphins completed their three-day minicamp, and several noticeable players stood out according to those in attendance.
In this week’s episode of Phinsider Radio, Jake and I breakdown the Miami Dolphins’ top performers at minicamp and what the team must do with Xavien Howard as the season approaches.
At wide receiver, free agent Robert Foster made a few nice catches. As did rookie Jaylen Waddle, who caught a 50-yard touchdown from Tua Tagovailoa. It was ‘electric.’ (Boogie Woogie Woogie) Jakeem Grant also caught a deep ball in stride from the second-year quarterback.
Another name that beat writers made sure to mention time and time again was cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. The 2020 first-round pick from Auburn was garnishing rave reviews during the team’s open sessions to the media.
Byron Jones didn’t hold back when discussing the 21-year-old cornerback.
“He’s an incredible talent. I think the way he’s approaching the game this year is going to be special. I think, to be honest as a rookie, he balled out in camp. I was really impressed with the way he performed and approached the game. He’s been consistent throughout the entire season in terms of the coaching. ‘Chuck’ (Cornerbacks Coach Charles Burks) is not easy on anybody. He’s certainly not easy on the guys he knows the expectations are very high for. I think Noah did an incredible job of just being there, being attentive every single day, and learning and trying to put fourth what ‘Coach Chuck’ was wanting out of him. He’s doing the same thing this year. He’s comfortable, he understands the defense, he understands what it’s like to be in the National Football League. Of course that’s a learning process for everybody. Everyone kind of learns at a different pace. But I love the way Noah is approaching the game so far.”
Igbinoghene could be forced into a starter role if the Dolphins move on from Xavien Howard or if the All-Pro corner continues to hold out. A lot is riding on Igbinoghene’s second season.
Another cornerback that stood out according to ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe, was Syracuse defensive back Trill Williams. The undrafted rookie free agent has plenty of versatility, which has been Miami’s motto since Brian Flores arrived in 2019.
Speaking of Howard, Miami’s superstar corner was not in attendance during Miami’s MANDATORY minicamp, and head coach Brian Flores made it clear the situation was unique.
The question remains, when is it time to panic regarding Xavien Howard’s holdout? Must the Dolphins trade X before the season, if that’s the route this safe And have they already missed their chance at capitalizing on his utmost potential?
