Steelers officially announce the trade for Joe Schobert

The announcement by the Steelers finalizes the deal first reported on Thursday night.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially announced the trade for former Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns linebacker Joe Schobert.

Although the trade has been in the news for several days, the Steelers making the official announcement solidifies Schobert’s move to the Steel City. As the Steelers and Jaguars both know, until all the paperwork has been made official, anything can happen.

Schobert brings five years of NFL experience with four coming with the Cleveland Browns and his last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. A 2017 Pro Bowler, Schobert has had over 100 tackles in each of the last four seasons and over 130 tackles in any season where he played every game.

By sending the Steelers 2022 sixth-round pick to the Jaguars, the Steelers are not scheduled to have a Day 3 2022 draft pick until the seventh round. The Steelers previously traded their fourth-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in order to draft Isaiahh Loudermilk in the 2021 NFL draft. Additionally, the Steelers traded their fifth-round 2022 draft pick to the New York Jets in exchange for their 2022 seventh-round draft pick in order to acquire Avery Williamson last season. The Steelers are likely to have more draft picks once the compensatory draft picks are announced after the 2021 season.

As for the financials, the only thing clear at this time is the contract Schobert signed with the Jaguars before the 2020 season. Schobert signed a five-year deal worth $53.75 million with $12 million being a signing bonus which has already been paid by the Jaguars and will not count towards the Steelers moving forward. Schobert had a fully guaranteed $7 million base salary for 2021 along with other per game and workout bonuses totaling up to $500k for each season of his contract. There have been reports that the Steelers would like to rework Schobert contract moving forward, but nothing has been officially announced.

The corresponding roster moved by the Steelers also has not been announced at this time.
