Giants punted at quarterback, and the fan base is overwhelmingly OK with that decision

New York Giants fans appear to be overwhelmingly pleased by general manager Joe Schoen’s decision to bypass selecting a quarterback at No. 6 in the 2024 NFL Draft.

We know that the Giants reportedly made a major offer to move up to No. 3 in an apparent effort to select quarterback Drake Maye. The New England Patriots, though, stayed put and selected Maye for themselves.

In a poll conducted by Big Blue View, only 8% (349) of 4,307 voters said the Giants should have pivoted to McCarthy and used the No. 6 pick to make him the successor to Daniel Jones. Another 4% (178) said the Giants should have selected Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

An additional 4% said the Giants should have increased their reported offer to New England, adding a third first-round pick.

Schoen chose LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6, and 67% (2,882 voters) said that was the right move. Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze would have been the choice of 17% (731) voters.

The overwhelming takeaway?

Giants’ fans believe the organization did the right thing by taking a player who should be a star receiver rather than a quarterback the team did not see as worthy of being selected that early in the draft.

Jones was going to be the starting quarterback in 2024 as soon as he is healthy enough, anyway. Now, he gets one more chance without a successor looking over his shoulder to show whether or not he deserves the job beyond the upcoming season.
