Leo Luna and I discuss that and more in today’s Niners Nation Podcast

I can’t explain why, but I love uniform changes. When I was a kid, I always l loved looking through my Eastbay catalog (yeah, I get it, I’m old) and checking out which teams had new logos or jerseys. Now that the 49ers have announced they’re considering an alternate helmet, Leo Luna and I wondered what it should look like in today’s Niners Nation podcast.

First off, as much as we loved the 1994 helmets, using them again would be a waste. The current helmets are too close to that ‘94 version for the change to be impactful. If you’re going to have an alternate helmet, jump in with both feet and make it memorable.

That’s why the possibility of the red helmets from 1955 is so intriguing – it gives the team options. For one, they could strictly stick to the old-school design without the logo. It’s a classic look that pays homage to the teams of the past. They could also slap the current helmet sticker on the side of the thing for a more present-day look and call it a day.

Or they could get dangerous.

I say, throw out the oval. You don’t need it. For almost 60 years, the iconic part of the 49ers’ logo has been the interlocking SF. That’s what the team should feature on the side of the red alternate helmets. As an example, picture something like this:

They’d probably have to make it a little bigger on the helmets themselves to make it look right, but you get the idea.

What do you think – should the 49ers go gold or go bold? We’d love to hear from you, and be sure to check out today’s podcast as well!
