POLL: Will the Lions receive the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft?

It’s not too early for draft talk when you’re 0-4.

Through four games, the Detroit Lions have done their best to make most of their games competitive, and probably should have won at least one of them by now. Still, they sit at the bottom of the league tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars awaiting their first win of the season.

With injuries piling up across the team, we might have to wait a while before we see that first win. This season outlook has gone from fans wishing for six or seven wins and the team looking semi-competitive, to being lucky if they can scrape by with three or four wins on the year.

It’s hard to sit here and be patient as a Lions fan considering their history, but we knew this might happen. The Lions were always an injury or two away from looking like a bottom-feeder thanks to the lack of talent on the roster left over by the previous regime. All we can do is hope for entertaining football and a high draft pick at this point.

Will the Lions receive the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft?

My answer: Yes.

At this stage, the Lions are a much better football team than their record indicates, and at full health, I think they’re winning at least four or five games. However, the injury bug is hitting this team hard and the schedule does them no favors.

The Jaguars are looking like Detroit’s biggest competition for the first overall pick and have gone winless so far with a much easier schedule but came close to beating the Bengals last week on the road. Their first overall pick, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, has had a rough start to the year and Urban Meyer’s face is plastered all over sports media due to his stubbornness, making the team the butt of everyone’s jokes across the league.

I think we probably beat the Jaguars head-to-head if they were on the schedule, but they’re not. It’s difficult to locate a game on the rest of the slate that the Lions should win.

If the Lions don’t receive the No. 1 pick, then that’s fine by me. They seem safely in the conversation for a top-five pick at least, and also have the Rams’ first-rounder which is looking like it will be a late one.

Detroit is in prime position to acquire some good young talent in Brad Holmes’ second offseason as general manager. It sucks that we’re talking about the offseason already, but that’s the hand we were dealt. We’ll have to be patient with this regime and hope that next year will be more competitive.
