The Los Angeles Rams will play their first preseason game on Saturday August 14th at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers. With 2021 marking the 6th season since the return of NFL football in LA, it’s hard to believe that we went two decades without a team representing in America’s game.

Nonetheless, we have two teams now and like the Lakers and Clippers and like the Dodgers and Angels, that’s enough for a home town rivalry. Both squads have reason to be pumped up for the upcoming season. The most obvious reason actually has a lower than normal structural profile and that’s the new home (with fans) to both teams at SoFi Stadium. Beyond that, both rosters are sporting new quarterbacks. The Chargers’ Justin Herbert is set for his second year after an impressive rookie campaign that landed him in the top 10 in passing yards. The Rams arranged the biggest acquisition of the offseason in trading for Matthew Stafford.

While there are more similarities than just home fields and QBs, let’s move on and take a look at where these teams differ and five reasons why, since 2017, the Rams are the better LA football team.

  1. Regular Season Wins: Rams 43 Chargers 33
  2. Playoff Wins: Rams 3 Chargers 1
  3. Division Titles: Rams 2 Chargers 0
  4. Head to Head Game in 2018: Rams 35 Chargers 23
  5. Defensive / Offensive Player of the Year Awards: Rams 4 Chargers 0

Since the Chargers mostly missed with former head coach Anthony Lynn, they’ve moved on by hiring former Rams DC Brandon Staley. Meanwhile the Rams have been winning so far with their 2017 coaching pick in Sean McVay. The next biggest difference maker could certainly be three time DPOY Aaron Donald. On Saturday August 14th, none of the teams records will be affected and not all of the starters will play. It should be a day to celebrate a new season of football for both squads. But when the chatter happens between fans, let’s remember the five above listed facts.
