Ranking the NY Jets’ uniform combinations entering 2021

The New York Jets have worn eight different color combinations of jerseys, pants, and socks since 2019. It’s time to rank them all.

8. Green jerseys/green pants/white socks

First off, I’d like to make it known that I am a fairly big fan of the New York Jets‘ new uniform set that was introduced in 2019. The uniforms are not without their flaws, but overall, I like the look, and there isn’t a combination I truly despise.

With that said, the G/G/W combination lands at the bottom of the totem pole.

• Best look: 2019 vs. Steelers
• Worst look: 2019 vs. Patriots

I don’t hate this combination as much as others seem to. It’s the worst of the bunch, but in bright sunlight, I think the green pops out in a good way to create a solid look. The team’s 2019 win over the Steelers demonstrated that.

However, the Jets need to make sure they never wear this combination at night ever again. They rocked the G/G/W for their Monday Night Football game against the Patriots in 2019, and without the sunlight to make the colors pop, the uniform looked almost as grotesque and lifeless as the players wearing them that night.

7. Green jerseys/green pants/green socks

• Times worn: 1 (1-0 record)
• 2020 vs. Browns

The Jets have only gone all-out green one time in the new look, debuting the combination against the Browns in Week 16 of this past season.

I think this is an improvement over the G/G/W combination. If you’re going to go all-green, go all-green! Fully embrace the Green Giant look. Don’t take any half-measures.

6. Green jerseys/white pants/green socks

• Times worn: 8 (2-6 record)
• Best look: 2019 vs. Bills
• Worst look: 2020 at Rams

This is the Jets’ most common combination in the new uniform set and their most recognizable all-time look.

Due to the Jets’ emphasis on wearing monochromatic combinations at home, the G/W/G combo isn’t necessarily their primary home look. They have only worn the G/W/G combo at home four times in the new set, twice in each of the last two seasons. They have worn it four times on the road.

At home, I think this is a great look. It had a classic, gritty feel in the Jets’ home games against the Raiders (2019) and Dolphins (2020), and in the 2019 season opener, the uniforms looked vibrant and invigorating under the September sunlight, especially opposite the Bills’ red-white-and-blue uniforms and in front of a packed MetLife crowd.

I do not like how these uniforms have looked when taken outside of MetLife. The Jets went G/W/G in both of their trips to Miami over the last two years, and I’m not a fan of how the green looks against the teal background of Hard Rock Stadium. The same applies for Week 1 of the 2020 season with the green jerseys against the blue background of New Era Field (now known as Highmark Stadium).

My least favorite road look for the G/W/G was the Jets’ Week 15 trip to Los Angeles this past season. It was not working for me against the Rams’ similarly vibrant blue-and-yellow scheme.

5. White jerseys/green pants/green socks

• Times worn: 5 (1-4 record)
• Best look: 2019 at Patriots
• Worst look: 2019 at Eagles

This was the Jets’ primary road look in 2019. They rocked it five times when playing outside of the great state of New Jersey. They ditched this combination entirely in 2020, switching to white socks for their road primaries.

As we’ll get into in the next section, I like the white socks more than the green socks for the white jersey/green pants combination, but this is still a solid look. In the right environment, the synchronization between the socks and the pants complimented the white jersey well. I liked the look in Foxborough.

I thought the green socks were a bit too much amidst the midnight green of Lincoln Financial Field.

4. White jerseys/green pants/white socks

• Times worn: 3 (0-3 record)
• Best look: 2020 at Colts

The Jets switched from W/G/G to W/G/W for their primary road look in 2020 (although they also wore G/W/G three times on the road as well).

I think this is an upgrade over the green socks. It gives the uniform a more old-school feel. The Colts game showed this off the best, but I liked this combination in all three games it was worn (also being used in Kansas City and Seattle).

The only issue with this combination is that the Jets scored 19 points and allowed 111 points across the three games in which they wore them.

3. White jersey/white pants/green socks

• Times worn: 1 (1-0 record)
• 2019 at Bills

The Jets only paired green socks with their white-on-white look once, doing so for the 2019 season finale up in Orchard Park.

I like the mono-white look better, but in the rainy and cloudy western New York environment, I thought the vibrancy of the green socks stood out dazzlingly against the white uniform and frosty backdrop. This is a fantastic look.

2. White jerseys/white pants/white socks

• Times worn: 6 (1-5 record)
• Best looks: 2019 vs. Cowboys, 2019 at Bengals

The whiteout combination is tremendous. It’s clean, sleek, nondistracting, and allows the shiny green helmet to really pop in the right lighting.

At home, the 2019 Cowboys game was immensely smooth. I also loved the look of the team’s trip to Cincinnati.

1B. Stealth Black (Night)

• Times worn: 3 (0-3 record)
• Best look: 2020 vs. Patriots

The Jets knocked it out of the park with the all-black uniforms. It’s a tremendous monochromatic look that allows the details to pop: the numbers, the “New York” wordmark, the green “wings,” the helmet logo, and the name on the back.

At night, I like how the darkness of the sky reflects off of the helmet to give it a green-black gradient.

1A. Stealth Black (Day)

• Times worn: 2 (2-0 record)
• Best look: 2019 vs. Giants and Dolphins

I actually prefer the black uniforms in the daylight over the nighttime. When worn in the day, the green details of the uniform – the helmet, number outlines, and wings – flash radiantly.

The Jets wore this combination in the daylight against the Giants and Dolphins in 2019 but did not don the all-back during a day game in 2020. That’s a shame, as I think this is the Jets’ best current look (and they’re 2-0 while wearing it!).

As a side note, I think the Jets should experiment with using the black jerseys, pants, and socks to mix and match with the green and white sets. They have yet to do so, only using the all-black set and never mixing it up with the green or white.
