The NFL has seen the “hip-drop” tackle drum up plenty of controversy over the course of the 2023 NFL season. The nature of the tackle itself can be dangerous, and although it can be unintentional, it can cause serious injury.

Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews suffered a serious ankle injury in the team’s Week 11 win over the Cincinnati Bengals due to a “hip-drop” tackle. Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh weighed in on the tackle, and what could come of it in the future.

“Yes. I kind of have, in my mind, a plan for that, if I was king for a day, what I would do, but I’m not, so no one cares. Right now, I just think it’s in good hands. The Competition Committee talks about those things, and if they decide to do something it would be for good reason. I know [NFL commissioner] Roger Goodell gets involved in all those things as much as he can. [Chairman of the Competition Committee] Rich [McKay] and all those guys do a great job, so whatever they decide to do, at whatever point in time, you just abide by it, and you say, ‘Hey, it’s what’s best.’ Then, in the offseason, I’m sure there will be a debate, and it will be voted on and all that. Right now, we’re just trying to get ready for the next game.”
