More bad news is breaking for Indianapolis Colts fans on Monday morning.

Quarterback Carson Wentz, whom many Colts fans expected to revive his career this year in Indianapolis, will have that revival delayed by at least five weeks following a procedure to remove a bone in his foot.

Because of the expected recovery time, it’s very possible that Wentz misses the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The Colts’ current backup is former UW quarterback Jacob Eason, although the team recently signed former Packers and Cardinals QB Brett Hundley, who last played in 2019. The last time Hundley played against the Seahawks, he and the 4-9-1 Cardinals embarrassed Seattle at home, 27-13, in a typical Seahawks late-season blunder against a backup QB (see the 2020 New York Giants and QB Colt McCoy).

The Colts are taking the safe route here with respect to Wentz’s injury, trading away the early part of the season for any further complications that could come about down the road. The Seahawks, meanwhile, are no stranger to having players with nagging foot injuries. How D’Wayne Eskridge’s toe injury will be managed this season is yet to be seen, but there is not currently a timetable for his return. Hopefully, the Seahawks have learned from the Philip Dorsett saga last year, which saw them delay surgery in hopes that Dorsett could come back before he eventually missed the entire season.
