Saints add a veteran kicker after losing Wil Lutz

The New Orleans Saints have signed kicker Brett Maher after his tryout with the team Monday. The tryout comes after it was reported that Saints pro-bowl kicker Wil Lutz needed groin surgery, that would keep him out 8-12 weeks. Maher competed with other kickers during his tryout today.

Maher was the first kicker in NFL history to make three FGs from 60-plus, 62, 62, and 63. Maher spent two seasons as Cowboys’ kicker from 2018-19 and has been on practice squads rosters since then with Jets, WFT, Texans, Cardinals.

He has had a very up and down career in the NFL so far, he should the Saints over until Wil Lutz is able to return. Lutz timetable will be determined on when he returns but the Saints preferred to get the surgery now rather than wait and see if it healed. He tested out the groin in training camp and didn’t feel 100%. He saw Dr. William Meyers who evaluated him and decided he needed to get surgery.
