Schefter: “It would be an upset” if Carson Wentz didn’t play in Colts’ season opener

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Indy’s QB1 is on track to play in Week 1.

Crisis averted, Colts fans. Carson Wentz is expected to play in the Indianapolis Colts’ season opener in two weeks against the Seattle Seahawks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

On Get Up, Schefter mentioned that it would be a big surprise at this point if Wentz indeed ended up missing any regular season action.

“At this point in time, it would be an upset if he didn’t play in the opener,” Schefter said. “Reading between the lines, because the fact that they’re bringing it up now asking if he could play in the preseason, well of course you think two weeks from Sunday you think he’s not going to be out there? Which means he’s back there sooner than expected. Which means the problem in his foot that existed since high school has been corrected.”

Schefter went on to further dive into how important Wentz views this season from a personal standpoint. After a worst-case scenario ending with the Philadelphia Eagles, Wentz wants to prove he can still be an elite-level quarterback in the NFL for years to come.

“Yes, he’s been fragile, but Carson Wentz knows how important it is for him to be out there. And I think it means a lot to him this year to prove that last year was a fluke — that he’s back and can get back on track to being a top-flight quarterback in the NFL.”

Wentz suffered the foot injury during Indianapolis’ second day of training camp at Grand Park in Westfield. Originally expected to miss anywhere from 5-12 weeks, Wentz was back on the practice field two weeks earlier than expected.

All systems are ready to go for Wentz, who the Colts will need out there when they begin a tough opening slate of games in regular season play.
