Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians asked for more from Scotty Miller – and Miller stepped up the next day
After practice on Saturday, Bruce Arians spoke to the media and called out receiver Scotty Miller. Not that Miller wasn’t performing well it was just that the Buccaneers’ head coach needed more out of him;

There’s always the threat of Miller going deep whenever he’s on the field. Not only because we know he can, but because he’s been so successful in doing so. With the Buccaneers’ receiving corps stacked the way it is, Miller has to be able to find a way to be more involved in the offense beyond the deep ball. As Arians said in the clip above, you can’t be a one-trick pony in this league.
On Sunday, Miller stepped up and answered the challenge from his coach. He made those “grimy” catches Arians was looking for which makes Miller all the more dangerous when on the field;
Yesterday, Bruce Arians said he wanted to see WR Scotty Miller make more of the “grimy” catches. Here in WR/DB 1-on-1s, Miller made one of those, down the sideline with CB Antonio Hamilton in his face.

Not only that but it appears as though Miller is in competition for the team’s punt returner – competing with Jaydon Mickens and Jaelon Darden throughout camp. Though many believe with the Bucs trading up in the draft to acquire Darden that he would be the favorite to win the job, Miller’s speed and elusiveness could provide a spark in the return game throughout the season.
In a position group where good players are not going to make the team, Miller seems nearly a lock for a roster spot. You can’t say for sure that he will given the competition at the bottom end with the top three spots engraved in stone, but adding another level to his game makes him a player that will see the field more often while keeping opposing defenses guessing as to what he’s going to do when he steps on to the field. That level could very well make Miller an indispensable member of the offense.
