In 2019 the Seattle Seahawks made Bobby Wagner the highest-paid off ball linebacker in the NFL. That, however, is a title that Wagner no longer holds, as it has been claimed by a divisional foe.

According to multiple reports, Fred Warner, All-Pro inside linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, took the crown Wednesday by agreeing to a 5-year, $95 million contract, with $40.5 million guaranteed.

Wagner’s current deal is for $54 million dollars over three years, for an average of $18 million per year, while Warner’s contract will pay an average of $19 million per year. Wagner is set to be a free agent after the conclusion of the 2022 season, but given his age, it’s unlikely he will reclaim the record with his next deal.

Oddly enough, the similarly-spelled last names and their ability to play inside linebacker are not the only commonalities between Wagner and Warner. Both entered the league as Day Two picks from Utah schools, with Wagner being taken in the second round from Utah State, and Warner being taken in the third round from BYU.

Now, for Seattle fans, attention will likely turn to Jamal Adams and his quest to become the highest paid safety in the NFL.
