Seattle Seahawks planning to franchise tag Jamal Adams twice

The Jamal Adams drama in Seattle could last a while

If you’re a New York Jets fan who enjoys watching Jamal Adams cause drama from afar, the latest rumors out of Seattle will have you smiling from ear to ear.

It looks like Adams’ contract saga with the Seattle Seahawks could be years away from a conclusion.

On Sunday, Pro Football Talk reported that Seattle was “truly done negotiating with Adams,” stating that the Seahawks had made a final offer which they believed was reasonable only for Adams to decline it.

After Adams’ latest rebuttal, the Seahawks currently plan to have him play out the final season of his rookie contract in 2021 before slapping him with back-to-back franchise tags in 2022 and 2023.

However, it does not appear that Adams will allow Seattle’s plan to go through smoothly. Today, Pro Football Talk reported that, if the Seahawks tagged him, Adams would file a grievance with the league that argues he is a linebacker for franchise-tag purposes, not a safety.

The projected franchise tag cost for a linebacker in 2022 is $17.9 million, a good deal higher than the projected number for safeties, $13.6 million.

Adams may have a case. According to Pro Football Focus, he lined up at inside linebacker or outside linebacker on 43.9% of his defensive snaps in the 2020 season. He lined up in the box on 57.5% of his snaps.

While Adams has been present for training camp at the Seahawks’ team headquarters in Renton, Washington, he has yet to participate in practice, watching from the sidelines in the midst of conducting what has been described as a “hold-in.”

Joe Douglas and the Jets own Seattle’s first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft courtesy of the July 2020 trade that sent Adams to the Pacific Northwest. They also acquired Seattle’s first and third-round picks in the 2021 NFL draft. Both selections were sent to the Minnesota Vikings in a trade-up move that resulted in the team selecting USC guard Alijah Vera-Tucker with the 14th overall selection.
