Last offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers evaluated the depth chart at inside linebacker and decided it was time to make drastic changes. The team chose not to re-sign Devin Bush, released Myles Jack and then didn’t try to stop Robert Spillane from signing with the Las Vegas Raiders as a restricted free agent.

With the team’s three best inside linebackers gone, the team was forced to rebuild. After adding Kwon Alexander, Elandon Roberts and Cole Holcomb this unit got much better. It wasn’t until injuries hit last season that things fell apart.

This offseason, the Steelers need to take that same approach with the safety depth chart. No, we are not calling for anything to do with Minkah Fitzpatrick. He’s set in place. As is Miles Killebrew who is the star of the special teams.

But the rest of this group should be fair game and not kept around just because they are under contract. This means players like Keanu Neal, Damontae Kazee, Elijah Riley and Trenton Thompson can and perhaps should be replaced. Get some new faces back there and a mix of free agents and rookies to give the defensive secondary more athleticism and playmaking.
