The league’s top dogs duke it out

No more underdog stories — Sunday’s divisional round features two matchups between the kingpins of the NFL.

First, the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills will both look to keep their Super-Bowl-or-bust seasons alive. Both teams were expected to cruise through the wild card round but faced unexpected challenges instead. Josh Allen threw two interceptions in a 34-31 win over the Miami Dolphins, and the Bengals needed a 98-yard fumble return to beat the Baltimore Ravens.

A second-round exit will be a disappointment for either team, who suffered heartbreaking defeats in last year’s postseason. They were also arguably the best two teams in the league over the second half of the year; the Bengals enter with a nine-game win streak and the Bills have won eight in a row.

At night, the Dallas Cowboys will try and make the NFC Championship Game a matchup between NFC East rivals. Dallas demolished the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild card round, and Dak Prescott turned in a great performance (four touchdown passes, 305 yards) after a disappointing regular season.

The 49ers are looking to reach the championship game for the third time in four years. Quarterback Brock Purdy still has not lost a game, and he led the 49ers to a 41-23 win over the Seattle Seahawks last week — the largest margin of victory in the wild card round. Reports are already emerging that he will be the team’s starter next year. Is it really possible that he could be the one to finally get San Francisco over the hump?
