Tampa Bay’s first-round pick is adjusting nicely early on in his first NFL training camp
After bringing back their entire starting lineup from Super Bowl LV, the Buccaneers had the luxury of drafting for depth during this year’s NFL Draft. And with the No. 32 overall pick, they did exactly that by selecting University of Washington product Joe Tryon.
The 22-year-old pass rusher doesn’t have a path to start for Tampa Bay right away, with veterans Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett leading the way off the edge for the team’s championship defense. But Tryon will look to get some snaps as a rotational piece in his rookie season, and it sounds like he’s already been a bright spot early on in his first professional training camp.
With the Bucs putting the pads on the last couple of days, Tryon has caught they eye of head coach Bruce Arians. After Sunday’s practice, Arians specifically named the rookie when asked about players who stood out on film from Saturday’s practice. He also had this to say when asked whether or not the No. 32 overall pick has met expectations so far:
“Oh, more than [met them]. He hasn’t been in pads in, what, two years? He’s whipping a lot of guys’ asses. That says a lot about him. He’s carving out a real, real nice role for himself.”
It’s certainly encouraging to hear that Tryon is well on his way to cementing a role in Todd Bowles’ defense, especially when you consider how dangerous a productive trio of Pierre-Paul, Barrett and Tryon would be to opposing offenses.
Arians was also asked about Tryon’s pass rushing moves and what he has to offer in his repertoire. The head coach answered as only he can:
“You should probably ask Tristan [Wirfs] and Donovan [Smith] because he’s kicking their ass pretty good sometimes. I don’t think he needs any more moves, that’s for sure. Maybe a little more strength, but he’s got plenty of that, too.”
The Bucs came into this year’s training camp in a unique position, considering they don’t have many questions regarding their starting lineup. But it’ll be guys like Tryon who will be worth monitoring from day to day, and it’ll be especially worth it to keep an eye on him throughout the preseason. If early signs are any indication, it sounds like he very well could make a strong impact for Tampa Bay as early as 2021.
