The Houston Texans aren’t overlooking Anthony Richardson.

While the No. 4 overall pick still has room to grow, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback showcased some of his dangerous talent in the team’s 31-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The former Florida product went 24-of-37 for 223 yards, a touchdown, an interception, and took four sacks. However, Richardson was the Colts’ leading rusher with 10 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.

As the Texans get ready for the Colts in Week 2 NRG Stadium, coach DeMeco Ryans knows the defense can’t take Richardson for granted, despite his lack of experience at the pro level.

“You just stick to your fundamentals and rules,” Ryans told reporters. “When it comes to tackling, it’s not going to be one guy bringing Anthony down. It’s going to take multiple guys, multiple hats at the ball, and that’s just what we’re about on defense. That’s our style anyways, but it’s going to take multiple guys being there because he’s such a strong runner and we definitely respect his game and what he’s put on tape.”

Houston faced a comparable talent the week prior in Lamar Jackson in the 25-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Texans limited Jackson to six carries for 38 yards along with going 17-of-22 for 169 yards and an interception.

Like how the Texans weren’t overwhelmed with Jackson, they seek the same outcome with Richardson.

Said Ryans: “We have to be prepared for it. Everybody just being disciplined on defense — that will be the key for us this week.”
