David Carr doesn’t have very many positive records in Houston Texans annals.

Aside from being the first ever draft pick in franchise history, the former Fresno State product has such records as being the most sacked player in a single season in team history with 76 set in 2002.

However, with the Texans beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-21 Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium, they were able to protect one of Carr’s active streaks that has now gone unbroken for 20 seasons.

According to Doug Farrar from the Touchdown Wire, Carr’s 19-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys in his first game was the last time a No. 1 overall quarterback won his first career start.

Former Texans, Giants, 49ers, and Panthers quarterback David Carr, currently an NFL Network analyst and the older brother of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, might be popping champagne in the same way the 1972 Dolphins do whenever the last remaining undefeated team takes a loss. Carr mentioned something on the NFL Network this week that really stunned me, but I went back and did the research, and it checks out — Carr, the first overall pick of the Texans in 2002, is the last quarterback picked first overall in a draft to contribute to a win in his first career start.

Not bad at all.

Lawrence did have a comparable outing to Carr in his debut game. The Texans defense limited the 2021 No. 1 overall pick from Clemson to 28-of-51 passing for 332 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions — a 70.1 rating. Carr went 10-of-22 for 145 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception with a 78.8 rating in the Texans’ first ever franchise win.
