Texans coach David Culley says having QB Tyrod Taylor has been a ‘blessing’

The Houston Texans are entering the 2021 season with an overhauled roster from the previous year. Nick Caserio has made a little over 90 roster transactions since taking over as the Texans general manager in January. And one of the positions that underwent the most turnover was at quarterback.

Amid the off-field drama and fractured relationship with Deshaun Watson, the Texans signed both Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Driskel to one-year deals as free agents and used their first pick (No. 67 overall) during the 2021 NFL Draft on Stanford prospect Davis Mills.

Of the three quarterbacks who participated in the Texans’ four-week voluntary OTA practices, Taylor has received a bulk of the praise from his new head coach David Culley when reflecting on Houston’s three new field generals.

“Having an 11-year veteran in here like Tyrod Taylor has been a blessing for Jeff and Davis,” Culley said during Monday’s episode of Texans All Access. “He has been great at giving information and being a great teammate. That is what will carry over later on with the young guys. It serves our team well to see a veteran carry himself that way and do the things that he does to help us get better.”

Culley’s comment to Marc Vandermeer and John Harris mirrors the leadership and winner description he gave when speaking on Taylor’s character in May.

Taylor’s first year with the Texans will be the third time he obtained the role of a mentor to a team’s younger quarterback(s) in his career. Last season, he served as a mentor to Chargers rookie Justin Herbert — as the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year described Taylor as “an incredible leader.”

The 2021 season will be the second time Culley has worked with Taylor as his starting QB. The two parties worked together during the 2017 season when Culley served as the Buffalo Bills quarterback coach. Under Culley, Taylor threw for 2,799 yards and 14 touchdowns while leading the Bills to their first postseason appearance in 18 years with a 9-7 record.
