Eagles leadership consulted Reid to get his evaluation of Hurts, sources said, as well as to discuss the dynamics associated with drafting a player of Hurts’ caliber to back up then-incumbent starter Carson Wentz. Reid has experience in this area: He drafted Kevin Kolb in the second round in 2007 when McNabb was entrenched as Philly’s starter; added Michael Vick to the QB room in ‘09; and paired veteran Alex Smith with then-rookie Patrick Mahomes in 2017 with the Chiefs. The Eagles have long valued Reid’s opinion and sought it out before making what proved to be a franchise-impacting decision.

After getting blown out by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, the Philadelphia Eagles are bound to get absolutely stomped by the Kansas City Chiefs (6.5-point road favorites) in Week 4. Right? Well … maybe not? It’s admittedly difficult to envision Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts teaming up to top arguably the league’s best head coach-quarterback combination in Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. But maybe the Chiefs aren’t quite as scary as they seem to be. Through the first three weeks, no team allowed more points (31.7 per game) than Kansas City. There should be some hope that the Eagles’ struggling offense can produce against Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. The perception that the Chiefs are this indomitable juggernaut just isn’t exactly reality.

Picking the Chiefs to cover shouldn’t feel like such a risk, but Kansas City is actually 0-3 against the spread this season, and they’ve failed to cover in seven of their last eight. Philly is 1-2 against the spread this season. But the Chiefs have something to prove this week, so I would expect tighter defensive play than what we’ve seen and an explosive offense determined to put as many points as they can on the board.

Shady is retiring. Is he the best Eagles RB of the 21st century? You can have an interesting debate between Shady and Brian Westbrook. Shady had the better career and better overall numbers. Westbrook was the more complete player and helped the Eagles win a lot of games. I’m still sticking with Tony Hunt as my top Eagles RB for this century.

Long lauded for his toughness and tenacity when he’s on the field, defensive end Derek Barnett plays with an edge. Sometimes, he says, that edge gets the best of him with penalty flags. It is something that Barnett agrees he needs to improve upon. “It’s something I need to correct and am continually working on,” said Barnett, who has been called for a pair of costly penalties the last couple of weeks. “I can’t put my team in a tough position even if it’s 5 yards, 10, whatever it is. If I’m hurting the team in that way, we’re not focused on the main goal, which is winning. I have to correct that issue.” Barnett said that Nick Sirianni has discussed the topic and that the emphasis from the head coach is that the entire team needs to improve with its penalty situation. The Eagles lead the league in penalties called through three weeks. “I just have to be smart, especially in critical situations. Just be smarter mentally,” said Barnett, who has been called for 23 penalties since the Eagles selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

A Chiefs get-well game. Andy Reid’s back in Philly for the first time in eight years, and he’ll have a lot more to worry about when he gets there than just catching up with old friends. If Patrick Mahomes hadn’t pulled a rabbit from his hat in Week 1, the Chiefs would be 0–3 right now. And part of it, to be fair, was some expected transition, with young players’ dotting the defense and an entirely new offensive line that’s starting three rookies. The good news for Reid & Co. is that the Eagles looked shaky on Monday night and were on the road going into a short week, and that should give Kansas City the opportunity to work out some of its issues in game situations.

He’s got the 6th-most wins, but NFL head coaches are ultimately ranked in large part by how many championships they’ve won, and his first 22 years have produced just one, Super Bowl LIV over the 49ers after the 2019 season. Some 25 head coaches have won two championships and in the modern era 13 have won at least two Super Bowls. He’s a 1st-ballot Hall of Famer, but to truly cement his legacy, he needs another Super Bowl or two. As long as Mahomes is his quarterback, he’ll always have the chance.

You can tell he’s very talented. You guys have all seen him play before — I’m not telling you something you don’t know — but he is a talented football player.”

The New York Giants will be without three starters — guard Ben Bredeson and wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton — on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. All three have been ruled out, Bredeson with a hand injury and Slayton ad Shepard with hamstring injuries. Shepard (18 catches, 223 yards) has been the Giants’ leading receiv er through three games. Slayton (7 catches) is fourth on the team. Bredeson started Week 3 at left guard. Now, the Giants will start their fourth left guard in as many weeks on Sunday. The Giants are also without linebacker Blake Martinez (torn ACL), offensive linemen Nick Gates and Shane Lemieux, and linebacker Cam Brown.

Although Ryan is an aging, immobile quarterback, he’s still a sharp football mind. Nothing is stopping a 36-year-old Ryan from identifying defenses he has seen a thousand times before. The Atlanta Falcons offensive line has not held up well to start the season; opposing defenses have sacked Ryan seven times so far and three times in two games. If Washington’s defense struggles to create pressure “and” sack Matt Ryan, he will light up the back-end of their defense. Although Calvin Ridley is averaging eight yards per reception, he is still a viable playmaking receiver, and the newly acquired offensive weapon Cordarrelle Patterson is dangerous, too. Like Washington, Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons have been bad on third downs, too, ranking 25th in the NFL. An immobile quarterback who will struggle to escape the pocket, 25th ranked passing attack, 25th ranked third-down offense, these are all the reasons in the world for Washington’s defense to create some confidence against a struggling Falcons offense.

I caved in to the prevailing fanaticism, especially surrounding the WFT’s defensive line, which boasts four former first-round picks. Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen helped spark the 2020 team’s turnaround — from 2-7 in mid-November to 7-9 NFC East champs — and I believed the quartet was poised to impose its will on opponents in 2021 like some of the great defensive fronts in NFL lore. With thoughts of all-time units like the “Purple People Eaters,” the “New York Sack Exchange” and the “Orange Crush,” I was ready to buy all of the WFT stock. Shoot, I even wrote that Young and Sweat could break the single-season record for sacks by a duo: 39, set by the Vikings’ All-Pro tandem of Chris Doleman and Keith Millard in 1989. Well, I was wrong. Young, who entered the season with some Defensive Player of the Year buzz, has yet to record a single sack in three games, managing just one QB hit in the process. As a whole, Washington ranks 29th in scoring defense and 31st in total D. The unit is tied for 16th in sacks (six) and 22nd in takeaways (two). To put it succinctly, Washington’s defense is the most disappointing NFL unit in this young season.

Some will say that Monday night’s win doesn’t mean much because the Eagles are so bad. That’s mostly true, but 36 points from the offense is a lot no matter who you’re playing. And it should have been 41 from the offense if the officials had correctly called that fourth and goal QB sneak play. It was a dominant performance for the offense, which has been par for the course so far this season. But what makes it even more impressive is that it wasn’t a dominant performance because everything was pinned on the quarterback. Dak Prescott had his worst game of the year, and this offense still couldn’t be stopped. And in a scoring league, that may be the thing that matters most when talking about this team’s Super Bowl odds. The ability to still annihilate defenses when their best player isn’t at his best is what will keep a team going deep into January and even February. For Dallas, Monday night’s game was an extremely promising sign for their future ambitions.

No. 1: Panthers vs. Cowboys, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET — Fox. Dallas is on a major upswing this season with the return of Dak Prescott. The team is boasting one of the hottest offenses in the NFL, and look elite, outside of a narrow loss to Tampa Bay to start the season. Ignoring what’s happening with the Cowboys would be foolish, because based on how the team is playing they have legitimate chances to make a deep playoff run. That resume is what makes the game against Carolina so interesting. The 3-0 Panthers have been one of the biggest surprises of the season. Sam Darnold has been everything the team hoped he would when trading for him, and the quarterback is getting better and more comfortable with the offense every week. The real story of the Panthers is their defense, which is dismantling everyone that comes in contact with it. The Week 4 game is a classic game of offense vs. defense, and if the Panthers can somehow pull out a win it’ll be time to start taking them a lot more seriously.

Additionally, quarterback Carson Wentz (ankles), tight end Jack Doyle (back), guard Mark Glowinski (knee) and running back Jonathan Taylor (knee) are all listed as ‘questionable.’ We saw how limited Indy’s offense was during their matchup against the Titans last week, but given the severity of Sunday’s game, I’d be surprised if all four questionable starters don’t play. Both the Colts and Dolphins are going to be down multiple starters in key areas, but Indy should absolutely look at this matchup as a must-win. The team already finds itself in a tough spot after an 0-3 start, and losing to the Jacoby Brissett-led Dolphins Sunday would even further dampen the team’s chances at making the playoffs.

The Dolphins will be without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (ribs), as the second-year passer is in his second week of a short-term injured reserve stint. Miami will also be missing starting center Michael Deiter (foot/quad) who is headed to IR following an injury suffered in Wednesday’s practice. Jacoby Brissett and Greg Mancz will be replacing Miami’s two offensive starters respectively. Miami’s injury report is otherwise free of game designations, meaning all other players on the active roster are set to go.
