Lurie can’t trust Roseman with 2022 NFL draft – NBCSP
April 29 is going to be one of the most important days in franchise history. That Colts pick is getting worse, but at the same time it’s solidifying itself as a 1st-rounder, and even if the Eagles wind up with two top-10 picks and a third in the top-20 they’ll be the first team since the 1991 Cowboys with three top-20 picks in the same draft (and only the second since 1975). The problem is Howie. And what a problem. He’s the reason the Eagles are in this roster predicament in the first place. And as of now he’s the guy who’ll be making the picks to replace the players who can’t play. Who he picked. And the cycle of mediocrity goes on. Howie Roseman has been the Eagles’ general manager since 2010 with the exception of 2015, and you can’t argue with his salary cap management skill and his ability to gain assets through trades. And you can’t take away 2017, when a collection of veteran free agents he assembled that was expertly coached by Doug Pederson won a Super Bowl. But come on. This is a unique chance to rebuild a franchise that has to be rebuilt. How can Jeff Lurie trust that process to the guy who’s used 1st-round picks on Marcus Smith, Danny Watkins, Derek Barnett, Andre Dillard and Jalen Reagor? He can’t. The Eagles can’t afford to blow this chance. Since being restored to power in 2016, Roseman has drafted 15 players in the first three rounds. The only one who’s made a Pro Bowl is Wentz, who couldn’t wait to leave. The last defensive Pro Bowler the Eagles drafted was Fletcher Cox nine years ago. The last Pro Bowler the Eagles drafted outside the first round was Zach Ertz eight years ago and the last one on defense was Trent Cole 16 years ago.

Can DeVonta Smith, Jalen Hurts, and Nick Sirianni get on the same page? DeVonta Smith’s rookie season is going fine, but it is obvious that there are a lot of plays being left on the field for him. Partially due to his mistakes, but largely because of misfires from Jalen Hurts and the offense not maximizing Smith as a big play threat. Smith isn’t just a player for the Eagles to throw short passes to. Though he is a YAC threat, using him largely on screens, drags, slants and RPOs really minimizes his ceilin. Smith can make big things happen down the field and has flashed when the Eagles target him there. The Lions’ pass defense is among the most vulnerable in the league. If the Eagles can’t figure out that DeVonta Smith can deliver big plays for them Sunday, I don’t know if they’re going to ever figure it out.

But the combination of his inconsistencies, the blossoming of Smith and Watkins, and the Eagles’ overall offensive dysfunction suggest that the rest of Reagor’s sophomore season will be a lot like it was in the first seven weeks.

What’s the word on Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson? The Eagles were in active pursuit of Watson, sources said, but Watson has a no-trade clause and has reportedly waived it only for the Miami Dolphins. With as many as three first-round picks in April’s draft — two of which are projected to be in the top 10 — Philadelphia is best positioned to pull off such a trade from a resource perspective. Given Watson’s stance, as well as the uncertainty about his future amid 22 lawsuits alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior, there’s little chance he would end up with the Eagles prior to the deadline. However, the Eagles will be front-and-center on the quarterback front this offseason with veterans such as Seattle’s Russell Wilson, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and perhaps Watson all available.

The Lions’ death-by-a-thousand-cuts offense matches up well on paper against an Eagles defense that loves nothing more than giving up a 7-yard pass. The problem is that the Lions never live in the end. They are well-coached, but their No. 1 wide receiver, Kalif Raymond, was essentially sixth on the depth chart when he was in Tennessee. It’s the rare game where the Eagles are the more talented team, and things could start to unravel in Philadelphia if they can’t win this one.

Berman: If the Eagles can’t beat a winless Lions team, that will be revealing and raise even more questions about the Sirianni-Hurts combination. There’s been considerable scrutiny of the defense, but I expect them to make life difficult for Goff and play more aggressively against an offense that lacks big-play ability. This will be a redemptive afternoon for that unit. There should be more concern about the offense, which has only surpassed 22 points twice this season. The receivers should be able to get open against an undermanned secondary. Can Hurts consistently deliver the ball on target? I’m not convinced. The Eagles will win this game because they’re the better team, but it won’t be sunny in Philadelphia all of a sudden. Eagles 20, Lions 13.

Avonte Maddox’s return to Detroit goes well beyond a typical homecoming. Sure, he’ll have plenty of family members and childhood friends in attendance to watch him play, but he’s also purchased tickets for every member of Detroit’s Martin Luther King High School’s football program to attend Sunday’s game. The gesture is merely a small way for Maddox to give back to his alma mater. “All the time that my coaches in high school put in for me to the point of traveling to different states to get me exposure to colleges, they don’t have to do that,” Maddox told the media Thursday. “They’re not our fathers, but they took the time out of their day to do it and that meant a lot to me, so whenever I can give back, I’m willing to do so and help as much as I can.” However, that is only the beginning.

Swift has been limited all week in practice, as has been his routine most of the season, and he is expected to be ready to contribute in his usual fashion. “No, I’m fine,” Swift said to the media on Thursday. “I’m just getting to Sunday and working my way back, getting ready for the game. I’m fine.” Williams’ thigh injury “kind of popped up last week”, per Campbell, “but he finished the game for us and did really well.” His status for this week’s game will come down to if he feels he can endure the punishment that comes with the position. If he can’t play, look for rookie Jermar Jefferson to be active in the running back rotation. Like Swift, this is a standard week for Flowers, and he is expected to start and contribute on his normal schedule.

Rams intend to trade WR DeSean Jackson – Turf Show Times
The Los Angeles Rams and DeSean Jackson have mutually agreed to part ways only seven games into a one-year deal. Jackson has only seen 15 targets in those seven games and apparently believes that he deserves more playing time and opportunities than that, but the Rams are quite happy with Matthew Stafford dealing it to Cooper Kupp most of the time and then Robert Woods, Van Jefferson, and Tyler Higbee after that. DeSean Jackson seems to make even less sense now than when the Rams signed him to a one-year deal worth over $4 million earlier in the year, so Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network are both reporting that the two will part ways soon.

It’s likely that we won’t know anything definitive until Saturday afternoon at the earliest. The Cowboys could even stretch this out until game time before making a decision. Prescott’s long-term health will be the overriding factor. In the meantime, they are getting Cooper Rush ready in case he is needed. One bad sign for Prescott’s availability would be his soreness on Friday.

What can Washington expect from the Broncos at Mile High Stadium? – Hogs Haven
I just can’t see any reason why Washington shouldn’t win this game unless Jerry Jeudy’s potential return dramatically transforms the Denver offense. The Broncos are a team with a middling roster that is on a 4-game losing streak. While it’s a fact that both teams have been losing, Washington has, in my opinion, looked a bit better in its losses than Denver has (if such a concept exists). I think Washington is the better team, and I believe the burgundy & gold will rise to the occasion and get out of Mile High Stadium with a win on Sunday. If they do, then they will have 13 days over the mid-season bye week to rest and get healthy ahead of a very important home game against Tampa Bay. If they don’t win, but instead fall to 2-6, then Washington fans who hadn’t started already can begin the mock draft season.

Big Blue View mailbag: Trades, Joe Judge, injuries, more – Big Blue View
Douglas, I think there is a lot to like about Joe Judge. I think he is “potentially” an excellent NFL head coach. I think he will get more time beyond this year, and as of now I absolutely think that is the right thing to do. I have not seen anything that tells me otherwise. Granted, I have my issues with Judge. I think he has been far too conservative on fourth down. I think he needs to accept a lot of the blame for the 0-3 start. I don’t think the Giants were fully prepared Week 1, and I think there were costly coaching decisions that really hurt them in Weeks 2 and 3. I think it’s a bad look for a coach who preaches fundamentals that the Giants make so many silly mistakes and commit so many unnecessary penalties. I think, though, that Judge is young and can learn. I think it’s important to realize that the locker room believes in him. That ownership is strongly in his corner. You want a reason for optimism? How about last week? Judge admitted that the Giants changed some of their practice focus because they realized they had gotten away from working on some of the small details. I thought that was a good sign.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker remains questionable for this weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills. The seventh-year veteran receiver has not played sine Week 4 as he deals with hamstring and shoulder issues. Parker started the year as the team’s number one receiver, but appears to have been surpassed by rookie Jaylen Waddle at this point. However, his presence on the field opens up options for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and creates confusion for defenses as they try to defend by Parker and Waddle.
