Howie Roseman reportedly a significant reason why Brandon Staley turned down the Eagles – BGN
The 38-year-old clearly comes off as a sharp dude. And it’s been fun to see how aggressively he coaches, which certainly paid off in a road win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. What isn’t so fun to think about is that Staley could’ve been the Eagles’ head coach. The Birds requested an interview with him after firing Doug Pederson. But Staley didn’t get on the plane to interview in Philly. And part of the reason he turned the opportunity down is the presence of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reported as much in a Monday column.

What we learned from Eagles-Raiders: Howie Roseman shouldn’t escape culpability – Inquirer
Roseman’s culpability, though, extends beyond the coach. Recent drafts have been subpar. Free agent signings have been spotty. The quarterback conundrum is mostly of his own doing. He inexplicably drafted Jalen Hurts — with a high-five from Lurie — and set in motion the historical regression of Carson Wentz and eventually his request for a trade. Wentz shares some blame, but the GM fostered a culture that permitted the kid-gloves treatment of the quarterback.Hurts is obviously not on Wentz’s level, even if the latter has better coaching and talent around him with the Colts. He was a second-round draft pick for a reason. And the Eagles likely projected his struggles, hence they wouldn’t have explored acquiring Deshaun Watson. Roseman can point to the three potential first-round picks the Eagles may receive in next year’s draft all he wants. He’s a master at covering for his mistakes. But the Eagles are still far from having a solution at quarterback.

If the Eagles end up with the Indianapolis Colts’ pick and have three first-rounders, would they be better off using all three to build up the roster, or using that draft capital to land a QB? That depends largely on their evaluation of Jalen Hurts, who has been inconsistent through seven games this season. Coach Nick Sirianni has listed accuracy and decision-making as two of the top things he looks for in a quarterback. Hurts will likely have to show improvement in those areas between now and the end of the season for Sirianni to be convinced Hurts is the guy. It’s rare to have that many first-round picks, and nothing is more important than getting the QB position right, so if the Eagles can use those picks to find a long-term solution at the position that they feel would be a significant upgrade over Hurts, they should do it.

Gannon should not be made the scapegoat for a team with no plan on offense and a rotten roster. But the Eagles’ timid defense is like so much about the team as presently constructed. None of the parts fit. Inviting long drives from the opposition might make sense if the Eagles had a high-powered offense to goad opposing teams into chasing big plays. Rewiring the attitude of veterans conditioned to attack could take time this regime might not have.

Sirianni quick to point out Gannon’s deficiencies – NBCSP
There was a recurring theme in Nick Sirianni’s post-game presser Sunday night in Vegas. It was Jonathan Gannon. And blame. Sirianni laid a ton of blame for the Eagles’ loss to the Raiders on Gannon, his passive scheme and what Sirianni seemed to indicate was a reluctance to adjust when his initial plan was not working. Even when he wasn’t asked directly about the defense, he referred to Gannon and the defense. He made sure to say that everything that happens with the team is ultimately his responsibility. Then he blamed Gannon some more.

1. First, the Eagles released long snapper Rick Lovato, a Pro Bowl selection in the 2019 season, and claimed quarterback Reid Sinnett off of waivers from Miami. The 24-year-old Sinnett became a fan favorite in Miami after some impressive play in the preseason. He was released by Miami on Saturday and claimed by the Eagles on Monday. So, the Eagles added a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder who has some skills after a terrific senior season at the University of San Diego, where he threw 32 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions, completing 66.9 percent of his passes, and becoming a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. Lovato is expected to return to the Eagles later this week.

Fantasy Football Week 8: 5 to Waiver Wire Add, 5 to Drop, 5 to Buy Low, 5 to Sell High – PFF
1. RB Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles. Miles Sanders suffered an ankle injury early in Sunday’s game and was carted to the locker room. With Sanders out, the Eagles split snaps between Kenneth Gainwell and Scott, as Gainwell handled passing downs while Scott came in for rushing plays. Gainwell saw a lot of snaps immediately after the injury and toward the end of the game when Philadelphia was only passing. There was a five drive stretch where we saw what the Eagles backfield should look like if Sanders misses time. Scott played in 13 of a possible 18 first and second downs, including a third-and-1. Gainwell took the rest of the third-down snaps and the remaining first and second downs. The Eagles are a pass-heavy team regardless of the situation, and the fact that they are constantly playing from behind doesn’t help. As long as Philadelphia can keep a game close, Scott should score more fantasy points. In games where the Eagles will lose by a lot, then Gainwell would likely do better. PFF’s injury expert Mario Pilato only expects Sanders to miss 1-3 weeks at most. Therefore, we should consider a Philadelphia RB in the short term. Looking specifically at Week 8, Scott should be the waiver-wire target. The Eagles play the Detroit Lions, which should lead to a competitive game. Detroit had also allowed the second-most fantasy points to running backs, so Scott should have a good game.

In the long run I don’t really know any other way to put it than to say Joe Douglas looks foolish. He could have just re-signed Flacco this offseason or found a better alternative. Now instead of doing that, he painted himself into a corner and is forced to part with a Draft pick. A late round pick isn’t a steep price or an important asset, but it’s more than the Jets should have had to give up to address backup quarterback, especially when the solution is so flawed.

What is left to say about this Miami Dolphins season that hasn’t already been said? Everything has gone horribly wrong and outside of a potential – certainly not guaranteed – couple of hollow victories against equally hapless teams, there will be nothing to point to and say, “There…that’s the reason I can have confidence in this team next year.” No, this season has been filled with sorrow and misery, and the future looks just as bleak. In a typical year, you can find the silver lining in your team’s awfulness by pointing at the high first round draft pick they’re guaranteed to get by being bottom feeders. Not this time. Miami traded their 2022 first round pick to Philadelphia (congratulations Eagles fans), so now we’re stuck rooting against the San Francisco 49ers.

What is the biggest surprise from the 2021 Detroit Lions? My answer: Dan Campbell’s aggressiveness. One of my biggest concerns with Campbell after the Lions hired him was his old-school mentality. The whole “let’s run the ball and physically dominate our opponent” mentality seemed 30 years old, and often with that mindset comes a very conservative approach when it comes to going for it, two points conversions and onside kicks. That concern of mine was only exacerbated when Campbell told the fellas at Pardon My Take that he would not go for two with the team down eight points late in the game—a common tactic that has gained more traction lately, especially among the analytic community. But Campbell has dialed the aggressiveness up to 11 this year. Through seven weeks, no team has attempted more fourth down conversions than the Lions, and while some of that is out of necessity, others show that Campbell has truly an aggressive mentaily.

It wasn’t exactly David vs. Goliath, but Lions head coach Dan Campbell decided to reach into his bag for a few tricks on Sunday. While it made for some exciting football, the winless Lions couldn’t quite topple the Rams. There is quite a bit to unpack here, so let’s look at each key decision by the Lions and how some of these aggressive moves impacted the game. RB Corey Clement. When the Cowboys signed Clement at the start of the season, it was a little surprising as he was on nobody’s radar. He’s played in all six games so far, but primarily on special teams. Clement has only played five total offensive snaps with three carries for no yards in garbage time against Philadelphia in Week 3. Unless Clement is one of those guys the team loves in the locker room and his special teams’ value is more important than we know, he seems like a good candidate to be released. While the Cowboys do get a lot of mileage out of their running backs (no. 2 in the league in rushing attempts), Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard are more than capable of handling the workload. It just feels like Clement’s skill set is easily replaceable.

Daniel Jones — The third-year quarterback did not have an eye-popping final stat line, but showed everything on Sunday that makes the Giants believe he can be their long-term quarterback. He made plays with his arm, with his legs, with his hands and athleticism. He protected the football on a day when most of the Giants’ top play-makers and their left tackle were sidelined. He showed toughness. Jones’ final stat line was 23 of 33 for 203 yards and a touchdown, 28 rushing yards, 16 receiving yards. It doesn’t do justice to the performance. Jones showed pretty much everything a team could want in a franchise quarterback.

NFL winners and losers: Wait … the Saints are 4-2? – SB Nation
Loser: LOL Panthers. Hey Carolina, you deserve absolutely ZERO credit for getting blown out by the Giants. I don’t care how banged up you were, I don’t care who was missing. New York had way worse injuries than y’all did, and still managed to take you to the woodshed. This was undoubtably the most embarrassing performance of the season for the Panthers so far, and they deserve to be mocked for it. Keep in mind this was also a revenge game of sorts, with the new Carolina regime going head-to-head with the old, led by Giants GM Dave Gettleman. The result was beyond ugly for the Panthers, who are now winless since starting the season 3-0, and there’s only one conceivable way this could get worse …
