Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 4/12/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

2024 NFL Draft: Day 2 fits for all 32 NFL teams – PFF
Philadelphia Eagles: WR Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky. The Eagles’ production after the catch substantially dropped in 2023. Western Kentucky’s Malachi Corley is dynamic with the ball in his hands and proved it by forcing 73 missed tackles over the past three seasons. Corley would provide a spark to Philadelphia’s RPO and screen games while he further develops his route running.

Report: Eagles sign C.J. Uzomah – BGN
Of course, Uzomah was not helped by being saddled with Zach Wilson and other Jets quarterback dreck. There’s reason to believe he could be a bit more effective with a better QB, just like he was when he last played with Joe Burrow on the Cincinnati Bengals. Now in Philly, Uzomah figures to compete for a backup tight end role behind Dallas Goedert. The Eagles also currently have Grant Calcaterra, Albert Okwuegbunam, Noah Togiai, and E.J. Jenkins on the roster. And there’s a decent chance they draft a player at this position at some point during the 2024 NFL Draft. At the very least, they’ll likely sign an undrafted rookie free agent tight end or two.

A review of Howie Roseman’s free agency trades over the years – PhillyVoice
Howie tale of the tape: 11 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws, 2 to be determined. While his trade deadline deals have mostly been losses, Roseman has mostly been money during free agency.

Breaking down the Eagles’ All-Howie Roseman draft team – NBCSP
Linebacker was not easy. The only time the Eagles have used a second-round pick on a linebacker in the Roseman Era came in 2012 when they took Kendricks. He had plenty of highs but even he fell out of favor later in his time with the Eagles. But he did play for six years and had 458 tackles, 40 TFLs and 14 sacks with the Eagles. He makes the team. The other pick? It was tough. Remember, Jordan Hicks was a 2015 draft pick so he doesn’t count. And after that it was slim pickings. We ended up going with Gerry, a converted college safety from Nebraska. He wasn’t a high level starter but played in four seasons and started 22 games with the Eagles. He was also a major special teams contributor. Who else deserved this spot? The Eagles have to hope Nakobe Dean can stay healthy and prove to be a third-round draft steal.

Updated Needs – Iggles Blitz
OL – Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta are gone. That may not sound like a big deal, but they were reliable backups for several years. Cam Jurgens is slated to take over at center and Tyler Steen is the frontrunnerat RG. That leave Fred Johnson as the backup OT and Matt Hennessy as the backup G/C. We’ll see if Brett Toth can win a roster spot. The team clearly needs an OL or two to help with depth and competition.

Philadelphia Eagles 2024 NFL draft picks: Full list by round – ESPN
Top three needs: CB, OT, LB. The Eagles have to decide whether to bring back veteran corner James Bradberry, who had a rough 2023. Either way, they need a youth infusion. Darius Slay is 33, Bradberry is 30, and the secondary moved a beat too slow last season. The Eagles need offensive line depth and have to start putting a succession plan in place for stalwart right tackle Lane Johnson. Ideally, they’d find someone who can compete for the vacant right guard spot for this season and kick outside once Johnson retires — OT feels like a decent bet for Philly’s first-round pick. Linebacker was a mess last season, and while the additions of Devin White and Oren Burks provide some hope, they need to continue to invest in the position — something they’ve been reluctant to do recently.

Eagles 2024 NFL Draft thoughts: 10 things we learned from ‘The Beast’ – The Athletic
6. It’s quite possible for the Eagles to trade up for a premier offensive lineman. The Eagles may be just out of range of the premier offensive linemen if they sit at No. 22. In The Athletic’s latest beat writer mock draft, all five offensive tackles Brugler gave full first-round grades to were drafted within the top 20 selections. Roseman has traded up in each of the last three drafts. No deal exceeded a two-spot leap, and no deal involved a trade package that paired the original first-rounder with a pick higher than a third. The Eagles have two second-round picks. One could fuel a leap of more than two spots (using Jimmy Johnson’s value chart, pairing No. 22 with No. 50 is a combined value just above pick No. 13).

Reviving a ‘dead play’: How will Eagles adjust to NFL’s new kickoff rule? – PE.com
Everyone is still digesting the news that the NFL’s kickoff rules in 2024 are changed dramatically and a lot is going to happen in terms of strategy and execution as we see how it works throughout Training Camp and in the preseason game, but this much is undeniable: The new rules create new challenges and, no doubt about it baby, the kickoff is very much back in play for the season ahead. “The kickoff had kind of become a dead play. There were 13 kickoffs in the Super Bowl, and there were zero returns. We had 88 percent of kickoffs returns in 2003 and in 2023 we were just at about 20 percent. That is a significant drop-off and something had to be done to the play. I think that is how the league is looking at this,” said Jon Ferrari, Eagles assistant general manager. “The league had made changes, good changes in the name of player safety, but because of that, you see the 20 percent return rate and the league wanted to answer this question: ‘What can we do to incentivize kickoff returns but make them safer.

The Dallas Cowboys have had trouble recently at finding success with drafting wide receivers – Blogging The Boys
The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of needs on their roster at the moment. Departures along the offensive line have created flashing warning signs. Even though linebacker was addressed with an external free agent, it remains a cause for concern. At the moment there is no running back on the roster worthy of total trust. You can see how “a lot” is putting it mildly. Buried a bit among the points of concern on the roster is the wide receiver position. Dallas has one of the best wideouts in the league in CeeDee Lamb on their team, and a returning Brandin Cooks who really found his form over the second half of last season, but outside of that there are a lot of question marks. Jalen Tolbert figures to be the next man up in the wake of Michael Gallup’s dismissal, but even though he was a top 100 pick two years ago it is hard to trust him. Jalen Brooks showed a teeny bit last season, but are we ready to trot him out all of the time in 11 personnel?

NFL free agency: Giants sign veteran DL Jordan Phillips – Big Blue View
The New York Giants have added another piece to their defensive line by signing free-agent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. Phillips is a veteran player entering his 10th season in the league. He’s played for multiple teams during his career, including the Miami Dolphins from 2015-2018, whom Phillips was drafted by as a second-rounder in 2015, the Buffalo Bills from 2018-2019 and again in 2022-2023, and the Arizona Cardinals from 2020-2021. [BLG Note: Same guy who got rattled by Eagles fans in Philly last year. Also the same guy who didn’t get punished for taking a cheap shot at Cam Jurgens.]

Jayden Daniels would be the fun pick at number two, but would he be the best pick? – Hogs Haven
Jayden Daniels would certainly be a fun guy to watch compete in a Washington uniform for the foreseeable future, but is this one-year-wonder, who plays with a bit of reckless-abandon, the best for the long-term success at the position? The last 15 Super Bowls have been won by quarterbacks who were considered pocket passers. Only two “dual-threat” quarterbacks have made the Super Bowl in the last 15 years (Jalen Hurts and Cam Newton) and both fell short in the big game. Can Daniels buck that trend, stay healthy, and become the first “dual-threat” quarterback to win a championship, or are we all just looking at fool’s gold yet again?

Kyler Murray to the Commanders is an NFL Draft trade that makes too much sense for everyone – SB Nation
It feels like we’re locked in a holding pattern ahead of the NFL Draft, waiting for that one big shoe to drop. While it’s safe to say at this point that quarterbacks will go with the first three picks — we’ve yet to really discuss whether a veteran player trade could shake up the top of the first round. When you step back and look at both the order, as well as the circumstances of each team there’s a glaringly obvious deal waiting to be done: Kyler Murray to the Washington Commanders. It makes so much sense for both teams that it’s remarkable nobody has really mentioned it up to this point — and that means it’s something we could definitely see happen.
