For team that’s less than 20 years old, your Houston Texans have had an awful lot of starting quarterbacks. Whomever leads the offense onto the field on Kickoff weekend will be the 16th starter in Texans history.

At this juncture, it’s all but assured that player won’t be named Deshaun Watson.

So, that leaves us with 3 other options.

Tyrod Taylor named week one starting quarterback for the Houston Texans

The wily veteran will enter his 11th season this year. Originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, the ex Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback will celebrate his 32nd birthday on August 3rd. That doesn’t bode well for his future as the Texans starting quarterback since he’ll most likely spend 75% of every pass play running for his life behind the Texans eternally-a-work-in-progress offensive line.

But, Taylor is smart, experienced and still the best option on the roster who isn’t mired in legal trouble and a pending NFL punishment.

Davis Mills named week one starting quarterback for the Houston Texans

Houston used its first pick in the draft this year to take one of the most polarizing quarterbacks selected this off-season. Rumors swirl that Houston actually wanted Kellen Mond, selected by the Minnesota Vikings in pick prior to Nick Caserio’s historic first-ever selection as a general manager. Mond would have made a lot more sense.

A former 5-star recruit, Mills, the 22-year old Standoff product has some believing he’s the next great quarterback taken in the mid rounds of the draft. Others believe he’s a project with major question marks, many revolving around his multiple knee injuries. Unlike Taylor, running for his life will most likely lead to a very short NFL career.

Caserio has shown he’s not shy about trading, signing other team’s castoffs and shuffling the deck chairs at a moment’s notice. If another team should cut a quarterback Caserio likes, don’t be surprised to see him add another face to the QB room. With very little continuity from last year’s offense, it’s not like it would disrupt too much, especially in light of head coach David Culley inexplicably cancelling mini camps.
