There were some players who didn’t exactly play well against the Cardinals.

The biggest disappointment from the Cowboys preseason game against the Cardinals was the injuries. Neville Gallimore looks like he will surely miss some time with an elbow injury. Several other Cowboys were also nicked up on the evening. But there were also some disappointing performances in the game. Here are three players who would have liked to have performed better.

Connor Williams

The Cowboys decided to give Connor Williams the start at center over Tyler Biadasz. Williams has been working at center some in training camp and with Connor McGovern improving at guard, there is some thought that maybe they want to move Williams over to the middle. That’s not likely to happen. Williams struggled with his shotgun snaps, to put it mildly.

This is a trend that started in training camp and has followed him into preseason games. There were no less that three errant snaps during the game and it was luck that they did not lead to turnovers. While Williams may have the blocking chops to play in the middle, the most important thing a center must do is get the ball to the quarterback. He has a ways to go to meet that objective.

Garrett Gilbert

The Cowboys primary backup quarterback didn’t have the best of games. It was hardly all his fault. The aforementioned snaps from Williams destroyed the rhythm on multiple plays. He also had some drops, including one from Michael Gallup. Still, through two games of the preseason, Gilbert has yet to find the endzone. His quarterback rating was 59.4 and he only averaged five yards per attempt.

The Cowboys certainly need to be contemplating competition for Gilbert once some veterans are released on cutdown day.

Kelvin Joseph

The Cowboys rookie corner had a couple of bad plays in a row. First, he picked up a penalty on a third down that the Cowboys had stopped. Using poor technique at the line of scrimmage, Joseph reached up and held while hitting the receiver in the helmet. This gave the Cardinals a new set of downs.

He followed that up by allowing a 34-yard pass up the sideline on a drive that led to a field goal by the Cardinals. It wasn’t a disaster of a game from Joseph, but with fellow rookie Nahshon Wright continuing to play well, the competition is heating up and Joseph could use a standout game.
