The Tennessee Titans announced a flurry of roster moves today, as they prepare to trim their roster down to 85 players by 4pm tomorrow, per the NFL’s deadline to do so. Jim Wyatt of the Titans had it first.

The first piece of news saw the team add a pair of veteran safeties in the form of Clayton Geathers and Bradley McDougald. These are pretty notable names here. Geathers totaled 244 tackles in four seasons (2015-2019) with the Colts, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He didn’t play in 2020, after opting out due to Covid-19.

McDougald has 82 NFL starts to his name. He’s played for the Chiefs, Buccaneers, Seahawks and Jets. He’s recorded 459 tackles and 10 interceptions thus far. A shoulder injury limited him to just seven games last season.

Also on Monday, the Titans waived tight end Deon Yelder, defensive back Reggie Floyd and punter James Smith. They also waived-injured defensive back Maurice Smith, and placed defensive back Kevin Peterson on injured reserve.

Yelder and Floyd were here for a couple of days. Smith was an Aussie-born punter that signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent immediately following the 2021 draft. He has a fascinating story, and stuck around for a few months, but it was always going to be nearly impossible for him to crack the roster with Brett Kern here. Peterson was origianlly signed in June after he impressed on a tryout basis during rookie minicamp. Peterson played in 12 games with the Cardinals in 2020. He’ll now look to get healthy and compete for a roster spot again in 2022.
