Trevor Lawrence: I won’t forget the haters when they’re backtracking

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is keeping receipts. A few days after telling “#Analysts” to “keep your opinions” in a message on social media, the 24-year-old quarterback said he’s taking note of the haters.

“It’s one of those things where you find ways to win, you get criticism; if you don’t win games, you get criticism,” Lawrence said Wednesday. “It’s the nature of the business. Obviously, we’re used to that here, so it doesn’t bug us. It’s a good reminder to everyone that we use all of this. It’s a chip on our shoulder, we use it as a fuel.

“Obviously, those people are doing their jobs too at the same time, so we understand it. But I think it’s good to have a little emotion and remember the kind of things that people say and don’t forget it when people are backtracking in a few weeks or at the end of the season or whatever it is.”

Lawrence didn’t name any names, but there were a few notable pundits who were vocal critics of the Jaguars quarterback in the last week.

Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman said on the Amazon Prime broadcast of the Jaguars’ Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints that he hasn’t seen evidence that Lawrence is the generational quarterback he was promised to be. Former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said on the same broadcast that Lawrence has been the “15th, 16th, 17th best QB” in the NFL.

And Chris Broussard of Fox Sports said that he’s been “disappointed” by Lawrence’s 2023 so far.

“The Chiefs, Bengals, Ravens, Dolphins and Bills are better than the Jaguars. And I’m a tad disappointed in Trevor Lawrence. I’m expecting him to become elite.”

Through seven games, Lawrence has eight touchdowns with three interceptions and a 92.8 passer rating. His 81.8 grade on Pro Football Focus ranks eighth among starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
