The Jacksonville Jaguars are primed for the most exciting season in franchise history. Man, does it feel good to say that!

“It obviously sucks.”

That was Trevor Lawrence’s takeaway from a season opening loss to the Houston Texans.

The box score shows 332 yards and three touchdowns from the rookie quarterback, but watching the game there were a number of mistakes from the first overall pick… which led to three interceptions and just over a 50% completion rate.

All that said, I’m encouraged by what I saw overall. Lawrence is a special player who showed off a strong arm and athleticism we haven’t seen from a Jaguars quarterback since… well… ever.

Here are three reasons I’m encouraged.

1. This throw

First and foremost, this is a throw a Jaguars quarterback hasn’t made in over a decade. And it’s certainly not one a Jacksonville signal caller has made on a consistent basis.

It’s a dart. It’s 45 yards in the air. It’s precise. It’s a touchdown.

I’m used to watching other teams’ quarterbacks make this throw on Sunday Night Football.

2. Precision, arm mechanics… the whole nine yards

Again, a dart. But look where he places this ball. It’s right in the spot where Chris Manhertz’s momentum is slowed up a bit so it takes him away from the defender and into the end zone.

Let’s keep this train moving.

All in all

Listen, there are a lot of problems on the Jaguars roster… and quite frankly, probably within the Jaguars coaching staff too. But it feels good to be encouraged by your rookie quarterback’s debut NFL performance.
