Trysten Hill is someone who needs to have a great training camp for the Dallas Cowboys

Tough decisions are going to have to be made when it comes to the Cowboys 53-man roster.

There is perhaps no position on the Dallas Cowboys that fans more differently about today than we did this time last year than defensive tackle. Rewinding the clock a year, things seemed rather promising for Dallas along the interior of the defensive line. Gerald McCoy was supposed to provide a stable veteran presence, Dontari Poe looked like a great find in free agency, and Trysten Hill was facing even more competition in third-round rookie Neville Gallimore.

McCoy never played a down for the Cowboys, many wish that Poe hadn’t, and Hill looked like a much better version of himself than we saw of him as a rookie in 2019 (although that bar isn’t exactly high to clear) before getting hurt in the same game that Dak Prescott was lost. Neville Gallimore played well in the opportunities that her ultimately got, but since then it has been a whole lot of addition for the Cowboys.

This offseason saw Dallas bring in Brent Urban (who can play everywhere) before drafting yet another defensive tackle in the third round in Osa Odighizuwa, then adding a true 1-tech in Quinton Bohanna.

With Urban, Odighizuwa, Bohanna, and obviously Gallimore in the fold, plus free agent Carlos Watkins, things could suddenly be awkward in any room that Trysten Hill finds himself in. A few weeks ago we polled you here at BTB and only 60% believe that Hill will make the team’s roster this year.

Truth be told Hill is in a tough spot in terms of variables off of the field, and no we are not talking about the reported issues that encircled him his rookie season. Gallimore has one more year on his contract than Hill does and both Odighizuwa and Bohanna are rookies that the team clearly believes in. While Mike McCarthy spoke highly of Hill at this time last year, another data point is that Hill pre-dates the arrival of Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator. Sometimes in the NFL coaches want their guys, a lesson we have all seen from time to time.

What’s more is that Hill also happens to be coming back from a torn ACL. This is hardly an impossibility as far as return to the playing field is concerned, but it is yet another factor that he is dealing with that his competition is not.

It does seem as if at present time Hill is floating on the line that you don’t want to be on which could lead to the team making a hard decision come roster cuts. Parting ways with a second-round pick so early in his career would hardly be ideal, but at this point Hill should be far more cemented within the team’s lineup than he is.
