Tuesday Cheese Curds: Billy Turner turned up for Watt in the Packers’ win over the Steelers

Green Bay is 2-0 against elite pass rushers without David Bakhtiari or Elgton Jenkins. That’s big.

For the second straight week, the Green Bay Packers faced an elite pass rusher without their top two offensive lineman and once again they were up to the task.

One week after Yosh Nijman held 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa in check, Billy Turner did the same to Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt. The box score might show two sacks for Watt, but both were not as a result of Turner. One was the flagged and then un-flagged trip of Aaron Rodgers and the other was the result of Rodgers sliding after a lengthy extension of a play that didn’t allow him to throw the ball away.

In other words, Watt was neutralized and Turner was the highest graded offensive lineman by both head coach Matt LaFleur and Pro Football Focus. It was yet another great effort by a player who has been quietly reliable since arriving in Green Bay in 2019.

Offensive line coach Adam Stenavich also deserves credit for getting his guys ready to play against another gifted pass rusher without David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins. Back-to-back strong performances have shown the Packers’ depth along the offensive line is real and it’s spectacular.

That’s not to say they won’t appreciate having Bakhtiari and Jenkins back. Just think how the line will be even better when they’re both in the lineup.

Now that’s a perfect story for spooky season.

The contract Turner signed in 2019 might have seemed expensive at the time, but we doubt anyone is questioning anymore over the past two years where he’s done an admirable job in different spots along the line.

As good as Turner and Randall Cobb were, what a disappointment from Josiah Deguara. After missing last year with an ACL injury, he has shown little reason why the Packers made him a top 100 pick. He has struggled as a blocker and has been invisible in the passing game.
