Both current candidates have struggled thus far in camp.

We said we appreciated Matt Prater. When he would go out and make kicks from 50-55 yards look and feel automatic, we said we didn’t take it for granted.

We took it for granted.

Question of the day: Is the Detroit Lions’ 2021 kicker currently on the roster?

My answer: I sure hope not.

I’ve been anti-Randy Bullock since this regime signed him to his overpriced contract earlier in the offseason. I really wanted Matthew Wright to shine through and stake his claim for the kicker spot, but both have struggled at a very underwhelming level thus far.

At this point, the Lions have a lot more sunk cost in Bullock, so barring a newcomer, that’s likely who they’ll go with if both continue to struggle. Neither Wright nor Bullock are a long-term answer though, and should the Lions roll with either of them I would not be surprised if by the halfway point of the season we see a change.

This feels a lot like the notorious Nate Freese era, where we’ll see a few names cycle through before the Lions find a guy they like. I understand that not everyone is Matt Prater, but 50 yards should not be this much to ask in today’s NFL.
