An exclusive Q&A with the Falcons’ new receiver Isaiah Wooden Sr.

The 2024 NFL Draft is now history. In all, the Atlanta Falcons selected eight players and have since begun signing undrafted rookies. While they may not have been selected during the draft weekend, they harbor the same aspiration as their drafted counterparts — to secure a spot on an NFL roster. Although the path is steeper for undrafted players, it remains achievable, as demonstrated by the Falcons’ success stories like long snapper Josh Harris, cornerbacks Brent Grimes and Brian Poole, and former right tackle Ryan Schraeder, all of whom emerged from the undrafted ranks over the years.

As I’ve done for the past several years, I have begun my 2024 UDFA interview series, where I’ll speak with those players that fans want to get to know heading into training camp. Recently, I spoke with wide receiver Isaiah Wooden Sr. out of Southern Utah University.

How would you describe your time at Southern Utah?

My time at SUU was great! I accumulated many accolades and achievements while there. Being named an All-American, First-Team selection, all conference and many more things, it helped put my name on the map and gave me the opportunity to be in the position I am in today.

What got you into football and who was your favorite team/player(s) growing up?

I first started playing football at the age of six and as soon as I hit the field, I knew it was something I was naturally good at. My first time touching the ball I scored, as I emulated moves of Reggie Bush, my hometown idol! I loved players such as Deion Sanders, Devin Hester, and Mike Vick, as well. These are all players I modeled my game after.

Did you receive any other offers? If so, what made you decide on joining the Falcons?

During the draft process there had been multiple talks with the Falcons and I. It was very surprising because this was a team I had high on my list of wanting to suit up for, like who wouldn’t? The Dirty Birds! Time went by and talks began to get better and I got the call right before the draft ended that I was on my way to Atlanta.

Have you spoken with Falcons’ staff about your role with the team?

Yes, my role on the team will be wherever they need me. Whether it’s in the slot where we can take advantage of mismatches or on punt returns, kick returns, or in the back field. Basically anywhere to help the team be successful.

What does it mean to you to officially make it to the NFL?

It’s a dream come true especially after all the trials and tribulations my wife and I have been through these past few years. It seemed so for away a few years back, from dealing with the losses of two children, working at Sea World for five months, and not knowing where I would continue my career. Now having my degree, I’m able to take care of my family, and in the NFL playing for the greatest team and fan base in the league!

What do you want Falcons fans to know about you?

I am a game changing playmaker with the home run ability. ANYTIME the ball is in my hands, be ready to jump out your seat! I am grateful to be part of the Dirty Birds family and ready to come to Atlanta to do a lot of special things. I love each and every one of the fans for supporting our team and I just want you all to know—you may not know me now—but you will soon! Rise Up!

Here’s a film breakdown by LockerTalk Podcast:

Wooden, a sixth-year receiver, has a compact, athletic frame. Starting at 156 lbs in his freshman season, he bulked up by nearly 20 pounds by his final year at Southern Utah, with potential for further growth. Versatile in both perimeter and slot roles, he poses a threat at all levels of the field, and he was hyper-productive in his final year of college, with 99 receptions, 1,682 yards, and 20 touchdowns.

Despite his size, he boasts elite speed for big plays and an ability to make tough catches. His instincts, ball tracking, and hands-catching ability are top-notch, making him a reliable target in his college career. The Falcons clearly were intrigued enough by what they saw to bring him in, and if all goes well, Wooden will be a dynamic playmaker in Atlanta, too.

I look forward to seeing what Wooden can bring to the Falcons this summer.
