WFLA News Channel 8 sports anchor Dan Lucas sits down with Bucs head coach Todd Bowles after each Tampa Bay game to assess the outcome in a segment called Bucs With Bowles. This exclusive content can be found on the WFLA YouTube channel and on PewterReport.com.

Following the Bucs’ 27-17 victory over the Bears that propelled Tampa Bay to a 2-0 start, Lucas and Bowles hit on several topics in the six-minute interview. Highlights include:

Todd Bowles on Baker Mayfield’s elusiveness and playmaking ability:

“That’s called escapability,” Bowles said. “Baker has a knack for understanding when the pressure is coming, when he has to run, when he has to just move in the pocket, you know. And that’s a feel you can’t teach.”

Todd Bowles on Mike Evans’ six-catch, 171-yard, one-touchdown day:

“Unbelievable game,” Bowles said. “A lot of YAC yards after catch on a hot day. He came in – I think he was under the weather as well – he came in and just performed like he normally does. He makes it look so easy.”

Todd Bowles on the Bucs defense harassing Justin Fields with six sacks and two interceptions:

“I thought the front seven did a great job of sacrificing for each other,” Bowles said. “Just understanding rush lanes and understanding not to let him out of those rush lanes. And the secondary did a great job in the back from a coverage standpoint, making him hold the football so we could get there. So from a defensive standpoint I thought they understood the assignments very well and not to be on the Justin Fields highlight reel when he’s running the football is a good thing.”

Todd Bowles on the play of cornerback Zyon McCollum, who started in place of Carlton Davis III:

“He played very well,” Bowles said. “He was calm. I was very proud of him. He had a heck of a ball game. He’s one of those unsung hero type of games. … It’s like we have three starters back there whether Carlton is there or not, we understand Zyon can play. When his time comes he’ll be ready.”
