Washington starts their cuts early

Every team has to cut their roster from 90 players to 85 by Tuesday, August 17th this year. Another 5 players have to be cut by Tuesday, August 24. The final cutdown to 53 players happens on Tuesday, August 31st. Washington has started their cuts early and announced 3 players had been released before this morning’s practice started.

RB Lamar Miller’s release was leaked out before the team made an official announcement. The former Pro Bowl running back has been with the team since late last season, but has always been buried on the depth chart. Now he has been outplayed by UDFA rookie Jaret Patterson who made a big impression in his first NFL game Thursday night. Washington currently has 4 other RBs on the roster(Antonio Gibson, JD McKissic, Peyton Barber, Jonathan Williams). Odds just went up for the local kid to make the roster.

Washington activated WR Curtis Samuel from the Active/PUP list this morning after he passed his physical. He has been dealing with a groin injury since mini-camp and also had a stint on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. This is good news and could line up with Rivera’s goal to have Samuel playing in the 3rd preseason game.

This is also bad news for WR Kelvin Harmon who was released this morning. Harmon suffered a torn ACL while working out on his own during last year’s COVID-19 shortened offseason. That was unfortunate for a late round pick trying to impress a new coaching staff. Harmon has been practicing, but has not been able to stand out with the new additions to the roster.

CB Chris Miller was the third player cut. He was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals in May. Miller spent time on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and has been buried at the bottom of the depth chart. Washington has added several DBs this year, and Miller was fighting an uphill battle to make the roster from the start.

The following player has passed his physical and has been activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List:

WR Curtis Samuel

The Washington Football Team released the following players:

WR Kelvin Harmon

CB Chris Miller
