The Packers need to retool their secondary again, and it starts at safety.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the Packers have some question marks in the secondary this offseason.

The seemingly annual retooling of the defensive backfield centers on the safety position this time around, with Adrian Amos and, potentially, Darnell Savage headed out the door. Who will replace one or both of them? That’s not clear, but it’s certainly true that the Packers are going to need to add bodies at safety.

This probably isn’t that novel of a problem. You need a lot of good to very good players to field a competent secondary, and the numbers game almost necessarily means you’ll have some level of need at safety or corner almost every offseason. But as the Packers try to add talent across the board, it does bring to mind the long series of misses they’ve had in the secondary, from Damarious Randall to Quinten Rollins to Kevin King to Josh Jackson and beyond.

I can’t stop reading mock drafts, but I need people to get more creative than repeatedly suggesting the Packers are going to take Michael Mayer. If we’re going to play pretend, let’s at least get interesting.
