Who Do You Want To Be The Texans’ WR2?

Someone has to step up.

If you agree to play wide receiver for the Houston Texans, you have big shoes to fill. From Andre Johnson to DeAndre Hopkins, the team has always had an All-Pro level wideout.

Until now.

Currently, Brandin Cooks is cemented as the WR1 for this team. With the departure of Will Fuller, it doesn’t seem anyone on the roster can challenge Cooks for the top spot. However, beyond Cooks, there are lots of questions in need of answers. Who will step into the WR2 role?

Nico Collins will grab the WR2 spot.

We’ve covered the promising rookie more than once here. He’s big, rangey, hungry, and fresh. Collins has the sort of boom-or-bust potential a lot of former Texans wideouts have had. He’ll either cement his place as #2 on his way to supplanting Cooks, or he’ll flame out like so many other promising young receivers in Texans history.

Randall Cobb will grab the WR2 spot.

Cobb has done a lot of things in the league for a lot of years. While he’s never been the Nuk on any roster, he’s certainly been a key piece in many offenses. Can he pull together one more great year in 2021? More likely than not, Cobb is a lockdown slot receiver, which lands him at WR3 on the depth chart. But if no one else steps up, Cobb may have to step in.

Keke Coutee will grab the WR2 spot.

Speaking of young wide receivers with a ton of unrealized potential, Coutee is still around, out of Bill O’Brien’s doghouse and ready to flourish. David Culley doesn’t even seem to own a dog, much less a doghouse, so this might create the perfect environment for a player like Coutee to finally flourish.

Chris Conley will grab the WR2 spot.

The former Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars wideout saw his best season in 2019 when he hauled in 47 passes for 775 yards. By way of comparison, Will Fuller V caught 53 passes for 879 yards last season, so without Deshaun Watson tossing the rock, 775 might just be all we can expect from a WR2 in a Tyrod Taylor/Davis Mills led offense.

A player not on the roster yet will grab the WR2 spot.

Just as with the quarterback and running back polls, there’s a lot of wheeling and dealing potential left in the first year of the Nick Caserio regime. Could they land a great WR2 from another team that’s overflowing with receiver talent come cut down day? Maybe?
